choiixCooler master is a well known company that has been around for many years.  They are known for their cases, desktop cooling solutions, power supplies and laptop cooling.  Of course this leads us to why we are here today.  Cooler Master was nice enough to send us a Choiix Air Through Stash laptop cooler.  Laptops are continuing to take over desktop sales these days.  One of the biggest downfalls of laptops is their shortened life span over a desktop and the largest contributing factor to that is HEAT.  Heat is the nemesis of almost all PC’s, but with desktops increased size and room you are not so limited with cooling options.  Of course with your laptop you don’t have the room or even the options to fix your cooling solutions, so you have to look outside your PC to find a fix.  This is of course where Cooler Master Choiix Air Through Stash laptop cooler comes into play.

Introduction to the Air-Through Stash

Cooler master is a well known company that has been around for many years.

Cooler Master take on the Stash

Air-Through Stash provides you an easy and economic way to add extra storage to your notebook with the integrated 2.5" HDD Dock along with efficient cooling.

Packaging and Contents

The Choiix Air Through Stash comes in a professionally designed and informative packaging with all the needed information on it.

I know it looks like those hard to open plastic packages that everything comes in these days, but you will be happy to know that the plastic clam shell opens a with compression fit.  No scissoring or hunting for a knife to try and jack open the package while attempting to not stab yourself, got to love it.

It comes with everything you see here, including a nicely designed instruction book that was actually written for this cooler, not for all twelve of their products!  The USB power and data cable and rubber feet on sticky tape, you can either place these feet on your cooler or on your laptop, whichever works best for you.

Closer Look at the Stash

The Choiix Air Through Stash’s design gives it the look of a wedge.  This shape not only helps to set your laptop in a more comfortable position for your use, it also helps with the cooling effect.

On the right hand side you get a glimpse of the power button and on/off LED.

In the center you will find the large low rpm 80mm fan which runs almost silent, yet provides for impressive cooling.  It pulls the air from under the cooler and blows it along the underside of your laptop cooling as it goes.  This is where the rubber feet come to play, not only do they help to keep your laptop from sliding off the angle of the cooler, it provides spacing for the airflow.

You will find three USB ports located on the back of the cooler and a mini USB port next to a DC adapter (sold separately, and not needed normally).  The mini USB port is used to power the fan and an installed external hard drive.

As you can see when everything is plugged in you will find you’re only gaining 1 USB slot, of course you are gaining cooling and an external hard drive!

On the bottom you will find the slide off cover for a 2.5” SATA II dock for either a SATA II hard drive or SATA II Solid State drive.  It is very easy to use, slide it open, remove the rear supporting bracket, place your SATA drive in and slide it into the docking port and place the supporting bracket back in to hold it in place.

Testing

Testing was run using CPUID HWMonitor and Hyper PI.  CPUID was used to track the laptops processor and internal hard drive, while Hyper Pi was used to encourage the laptop to run at a heavy load which will run up the temperature.

As it shows here, this laptop runs very hot, even at idle and as expected under idle there is not much of a difference between temperatures with or without the Choiix Air Through Stash.

Now under Hyper PI’s assault we see the Choiix Air Through Stash shine.  It dropped the CPU temp almost 11% and the HDD just over 13%.  Pretty impressive numbers for a laptop cooler with all its features that costs around $30.

Conclusion

I would like to thank Cooler Master for sending us the Choiix Air Through Stash to review.  I have to admit I was more impressed than I originally imagined.  I really like the built in hard drive port, and installing and using it was a snap.  I ran data transfers between my laptop and the built in hard drive looking for slow response times and hang ups that could be blamed on the integrated docking port and or the data transfer cables.  I compared this to an external back up hard drive I have set up, and was surprised and happy to see no issues what so ever. One thing you should consider when purchasing this product is that the SATA II docking is limited to 500gb due to the integrated adapter.  Currently on Newegg.com I’m only finding one 2.5” drive over 500gb’s, but with the 3.5” drives hitting 2tb’s I wouldn’t think it would be long before this carries over to the smaller cousins.  I was a little worried about the angle on the cooler, since my current laptop cooler is flat.  I had nothing to worry about and found I actually preferred the angle set up for comfort while typing.  I did try using a larger 17” laptop and I would recommend that you stick with something 15” or smaller, 17’s are just a little too large to use.  You can tell that this cooler was well thought out and designed.  I found a lot of other laptop coolers with USB hubs, but this is the only laptop cooler that I could find with an integrated SATA II hard drive bay.  This makes it extremely useful and should be a must have for anyone that either uses/stores massive amounts of data or likes to back up their data for safety reasons.  No more lugging around that external hard drive when you need to back something up, it’s already there!

Pro’s:

  • 80mm fan
  • 3 USB ports
  • Everything powered by USB or sold separately DC adapter
  • Completely tool-less SATA II 2.5” HDD dock!!!!
  • Hot swappable, no drivers needed
  • Impressive Cooling Power

Con’s:

  • Size limit on laptop
  • 500gb limit on HDD
