Phanteks took the world by storm with the introduction of the PH-TC14PE series. Coming in an assortment of flavorful colors and to top it off it was one of the best coolers received that year. Phanteks is wanting to repeat the success of the TC14PE with the new but smaller TC12DX.

Introduction

You really have to give it to Phanteks. In the five years they have been around they have turned the CPU cooling world upside down. Being one of the first companies to make great colors to coolers as the same thing not sacrificing cooling performance.

Phanteks took the world by storm with the introduction of the PH-TC14PE series. Coming in an assortment of flavorful colors and to top it off it was one of the best coolers received that year. Phanteks is wanting to repeat the success of the TC14PE with the new but smaller TC12DX.

Phantek’s take on the TC12DX

PH-TC12DX, a U-Type dual tower heat-sink with four 6mm heat-pipes allows for optimal airflow and cooling. PH-TC12DX’s 6mm heat-pipes are linearly aligned and developed to have the least amount of air and thermal resistance. Incorporating P.A.T.S and C.P.S.C Technologies, PH-TC12DX delivers better heat dissipation and heat transfers. PH-TC12DX includes dual PH-F120HP PWM Premium fans to allow for higher performance and/or silent operation.

Patented. P.A.T.S (Physical Antioxidant Thermal Shield) will greatly increase the cooling performance and reliability while deflecting other thermal radiation from other heat sources, such as the GPU, South Bridge, North Bridge, etc. P.A.T.S, ran at a long period, will display significantly better results in an enclosure, closed environment, than a tech station, open environment. In extreme conditions, PATS is able to withstand temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. P.A.T.S is environmental friendly and non-toxic.

Patented. C.P.S.C (Cold Plasma Spraying Coating Technology) is a brand new technologic forming deposit that displaces heat onto corresponding metals at a quicker rate. With this technology, the Phanteks PH-TC12DX enhances thermal conductivity on the soldered surfaces of the heat-pipes through the copper deposits.

Phanteks PH-F120HP PWM Premium fans uses UFB (Updraft Floating Balance) bearing, Nine blades and MAFO (Maelstrom Air-Fort Optimization) drive system to achieve massive airflow and perfect dynamic balance.  The PH-F120HP fans with the support of the anti-acoustic rubber pad and rubber bar produces low level dB(A) and eliminates vibration. With PWM functions built in, PH-F120HP fans allows you to set speed adjustments for either performance and/or silent operation.

SoliSku universal mounting kit provides broad socket compatibilities for Intel LGA 2011/1150/1155/1156/1366/775 and AMD FM2/FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2+/AM2 (Stock back-plate required).

Phanteks PH-NDC is made of high purity Nano diamond-like particles to improve the thermal conductance between components. The PH-NDC is a superb quality thermal compound for heat-sinks. Heat generated by CPUs will transfer to the heat-sinks without reduction in efficiency and resistance.


Closer look

Like the older and larger brother the TC12DX comes in standard silver, black, blue and the awesome red we are reviewing today. Each cooler comes with matching fans which we will discuss later.

The TC12DX is a twin tower-design but not quite like the TC14CS. The CS has two large towers of fins that each could easily be separate coolers. The DX is made of two smaller towers with a single plate that span the both to make it look like a single tower.

The DX gets the same coating treatment that the other coolers had received. The patented P.A.T.S. and C.P.S.C. compounds allows the cooler to repeal heat products from other components in the PC while better dissipating the heat that is made by the CPU.

The cooler comes with most of the SoliSku mounting system already mounted to the base. This saves the builder a couple of minutes in the build process. The rest has to be assembled and then attached to the base.

Looking at the base you see signs of machining but have a nice polished shine.

The cooler can be attached to any of the current AMD and Intel sockets.

The fans of the cooler come with white frames but the blades are color-matched to the color of the cooler chosen. The fans are PWM controller and have an operation specification of 600-1800 RPM at 21.9-27.6 dBA moving 23-68.5 CFM of air.

Testing Methodology

For our testing we will be using the following procedures and parameters to acquire the necessary data:

  1. Thermal compound used is Arctic Silver 5
  2. Idle temperatures are recorded after the system has been allowed to idle for thirty minutes from the point Windows has finished loading.
  3. Load temperatures are recorded by running OCCT for twenty minutes on all available threads.
  4. Real Temp is used for the recording of all temperature sensor reading.
  5. PWM function is disabled via BIOS to allow the fans to run at full speed.
  6. CPU model and overclock speed used for testing are outlined below in "Test Hardware".
  7. Each cooler is first tested with one fan supplied from the manufacturer.
  8. Each cooler is then tested again with a second fan attached if provided by the manufacturer.

Conclusion

If you are a fan of Phanteks, you will be proud of the TC12DX. It surprised us how smaller it is. This assumption is mostly due to the size characteristics of the TC14PE and the TC14CS which we have also tested. Where some may have issues with mounting the larger coolers thee problems should not exist with the TC12DX.

Even with the cooler being on the smaller size of the bigger brothers, TC12DX performed pretty well. At stock the heat produced by the CPU did not stand a chance. Overclocking our i7 3930k to 4.3GHz and pumping 1.35 volts into it, we saw the cooler beat out the bigger Evercool Silent Shark.

Not only is the cooling performance of the TC12DX superb but so is its looks. Phanteks has cornered the market with producing coolers that can be easily color matched with the rest of your rig. Available in standard silver, black, blue and red with matching fans the cooler look as good as they perform.

Beside the cooling level of the cooler you have to enjoy lack of noise from the cooler. In PWM mode, we were able to enjoy our overall computing sessions. If you are the use the cooler with the fans going all out, yes the noise level does increase. But even then it is not to the level where you cannot tolerate it for a long period of time.
