System Configuration & Testing

For this review, I did not use my standard test bench. Instead, I used my main editing system. This was due to the fact it has a custom loop, and this the Founders Edition 1080 Ti is permanently installed with the KOMODO full cover block. I used FurMark to stress test the GPU on both air and on water. I also compared the results to the EVGA 1080 Ti FTW 3, to see how well the reference card does on water, compared to an AIB partner card. Next, I ran Firestrike and Time Spy, as well as Unigine Heaven. The much lower temperatures the card achieves on the water block, we should see an increase in performance going from air to water.

Test System

  • Intel I7 5930k @ 4.3 GHz
  • GTX 1080 Ti Founds Edition on a Swiftech KOMODO Full Cover Block
  • GIGABYTE X99 Phoenix SLI motherboard
  • 32 GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 2666 MHz
  • 512 GB ADATA SU800 2.5” SATA 6 SSD
  • EVGA 1600-Watt Super Nova P2 80+ Platinum PSU
  • Custom EK Loop
  • Case Labs SM8 Merlin Chassis

Software

  • FurMark
  • 3DMARK
  • UNIGINE HEAVEN
  • PASSMARK PERFORMANCE TEST

FurMark

“FurMark is a very intensive OpenGL benchmark that uses fur rendering algorithms to measure the performance of the graphics card. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that's why FurMark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called GPU burner) for the graphics card.”

3DMARK

3DMark Logo

3DMark is a computer benchmarking tool created and developed by Futuremark used to determine the performance of a computer's 3D graphic rendering and CPU workload processing capabilities. It does this through a series of graphics, physics, and/or CPU tests. I used 3DMark’s most popular benchmark, Fire Strike as well as their newest DX12 benchmark, Time Spy to test the 1080 Ti. The card was tested at both stock and overclocked to +125 on the core and +150 on the memory, Using the GPU TWEAK II from Asus. I ran both Fire Strike and the new DX12 benchmark, Time Spy. Here are the results. During 3DMARK testing, the KOMODO water block kept the 1080 ti at a cool 57°c.

UNIGINE HEAVEN

This is a screen shot of the setting I ran on the Unigine Heaven Benchmark.

The Heaven Benchmark is a DirectX 11 benchmark designed to stress your GPU under heavy loads. The Heaven Benchmark can be used to determine the stability of a GPU under extremely stressful conditions. I ran the Heaven Benchmark on a custom Preset, Ultra Quality, Extreme Tessellation, AA X8, in 1080p using the DX11 API. With these settings, the Founders Edition 1080 Ti with the KOMODO water block received an overall score of 3714 with an average FPS of 147.4, a minimum of 36.1 FPS, and a maximum of 315.2 FPS. The max temperature during this run was 56°C.

The Founders Edition 1080 Ti with reference cooler received an overall score of 3530 with an average FPS of 140.1, a minimum of 35.5, and a maximum of 304.1 FPS. The max temp during this run was 77°C. This clearly shows the water block not only lowers the temperature, but increases the performance.

Passmark Performance Test – 2D and 3D GRAPHICS MARK TEST

“Fast, easy to use, PC speed testing and benchmarking. PassMark PerformanceTest ™ allows you to objectively benchmark a PC using a variety of different speed tests and compare the results to other computers.”

Swiftech KOMODO NV-LE GTX 1080 TI GPU Block

The 2D Graphics Mark test achieved an overall score of 992.
