Closet look at the Duet

Immediately, you see can see why the BlacX Duet is different from all the other docking stations on the market. The dual slots for two hard drives make it ideal for disk to disk copying. Just like the original BlacX, the Duet supports both 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard disks. If you remember the old days of the Atari 2600/5200, you have a very good idea of how the drive is inserted into the dock. There are no screws or tools needed to get the Duet operational, like when working with enclosures. Because this is a dock and not an enclosure, your drive is exposed to the elements. On the bright side, it should need no form of cooling as the air around it takes care of that.

Besides the two openings for drives, there are also two eject buttons for removing each independently. When drives are not needed, you can simply turn it off with the HDD power button. This button also serves another purpose. A small light indicator is present to show you which drive or drives are active to eliminate any chance of ejecting the drive during operation.

There are three ways the Duet can be connected to your PC. The first is via the USB port, which will easily support two hard disks. The second is through the eSATA port. If your eSATA port does not offer multi-disk support, you will only be able to access one drive at a time. Due to the fact that 3.5" drives require much more power than a 2.5" drive, A/C power is required.

Testing the Duet

Testing Hardware:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58
Processor: Intel Core i7 920
Ram:OCZ Blade DDR3 PC12800 6GB Tri-Channel
Video Card: XFX HD 4770
HDD: Seagate 7200.11
Power: Thermaltake Tough Power XT 1000
Case: Open Air
Cooling: Coolermaster 212 Plus
OS: Windows 7 RC

Testing Software: HD Tune Pro 3.50

HD Tune Pro 3.50

HD Tune is a Hard Disk utility which has the following functions:

  • Benchmark: measures the performance
  • Info: shows detailed information
  • Health: checks the health status by using SMART
  • Error Scan: scans the surface for errors
  • Temperature display

HD Tune may also work with other storage devices such as memory cards, USB sticks, iPods, etc.

The above image shows a screen shot of HD Tune while using the Duet through the USB port. Speeds are great as they can be using the aging port. We were amazed of the sustained transfer rate of the Duet.

Here we have the Duet connected to the eSATA port of my case. For larger file transfer this way is highly recommended as it cuts down on the transfer time compared to USB.

Conclusion

There are tons of hard drive docks out there to pick from. Thermaltake took it upon themselves to make theirs slightly different by adding an additional SATA port for another drive. This is ideal for those that want to transfer files quickly. At the same time, it is more convenient.  Additionally, Thermaltake added an eSATA port to the back of the duet. Great for those that do not want to have to wait for files to transfer from one drive to another. In my first review of the original BlacX, we said it was a must have. The same goes for the Duet, especially if you are a technician or enthusiast.
