General Performance Testing
All performance testing was done with the i7 7400K and GTX 1070 at default clock speed. Games where ran at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and higher settings enabled.

Super PI Modded 1.5
“In August 1995, the calculation of pi up to 4,294,960,000 decimal digits was succeeded by using a supercomputer at the University of Tokyo. The program was written by D. Takahashi in collaboration with Dr. Y. Kanada at the computer center. This record should be the current world record. (Details are shown in the windows help.) This record-breaking program was ported to personal computer environment such as Windows NT and Windows 95. In order to calculate 33.55 million digits, it takes within 3 days with a Pentium 90 MHz, 40 MB main memory and 340 MB available storage.”
CPU Performance Testing
Fritz Chess is a benchmark in which a fictitious game of chess is played. As each move has to be calculated by the computer, it is an excellent test of CPU muscle.

The benchmark shows a rating in MIPS (million instructions per second). The rating value is calculated from the measured speed, and it is normalized with results of Intel Core 2 CPU with multi-threading option switched off. So if you have modern CPU from Intel or AMD, rating values in single-thread mode must be close to real CPU frequency. There are two tests, compression with LZMA method and decompression with LZMA method. Once the total passes reaches 100, the score is taken.

ATTO Disk Benchmark

We Tested 1 drive and 2 Drives in RAID-0 via the Chipset and Intel RST. We see great scaling from one to two drives.
Continuing on to 3 and 4 drives, we again see great scaling like we saw in other Intel 200 series (z270) board reviews. Pushing around 2GB per second read and write out of a few SATA drives is a great thing.

A Single SATA Drive in AHCI mode scores quite well, there are no apparent bottlenecks anywhere.
One of the features of X299 over the older X99 based platform is the DMI link has been upgraded to 3.0, supporting high speed NVMe SSD’s via the chipset. We tested a Samsung 960 Pro 2TB in both M.2 slots, and as you can probably see, there is no problem topping out the full speed of the drive. The DMI 3.0 link is limited to x4 throughput, so two high performance NVMe M.2 drives, or a combination of M.2 and U.2 drives will quickly peg out the link at just under 4GB/s.
The X299 chipset does support Optane Memory technology, so using one of these slots with an Intel Optane drive can make a huge difference in daily performance.

The newest game in our benchmark suite, Thief is also one of the most demanding and has the highest recommended system requirements. Those heavy requirements allow it to use the Unreal 3 game engine to great effect. It also features AMD's Mantle API, as well as Microsoft's common DirectX 11 API.
