Final Thoughts and Conclusion
It is easy to see why MSI’s Krait series has been so popular. One look at the Z170A Krait Gaming 3X and the cleanliness of the black and white color scheme is eye catching. The all-white LED lighting further enhances that look. MSI has been very thoughtful in designing one very handsome motherboard. The same thoughtfulness that appears in those also extends to the motherboard layout as well. Not a single switch, header, or jack seems to be poorly placed. I would have preferred to see all the SATA ports placed on the same side of the board, but the placement SATA Express port is certainly not a deal breaker.
The overclocking ability of the Z170A Krait Gaming 3X is impressive for a sub $200 motherboard. 4.9 GHz was quite easy thanks to the well laid-out BIOS. Reality is that most people would not feel comfortable dumping 1.5 volts into their Skylake on a daily basis. A 4.5-4.6 GHz clock speed with 1.3v would be great for a system that sees daily use. I know I would be perfectly happy with it.
Throughout the testing the Z170A Krait Gaming 3X showed mostly well above average scores. The memory did seem a bit low, but nothing alarming. Gaming performance was outstanding. Storage performance was quite good as well.
