Lexar Media 32GB Triton USB 3.0 Jump Drive Review

Introduction

Today, we were able to score our first USB 3.0 flash drive. It is an offering from Lexar Media in the form of the Triton. With everything storage-wise already hitting USB 3.0 full swing why haven't seen very man flash drives go the same route. I honestly could not answer that question, but I can tell you they are here now and we have one.

Closer look

With the Lexar Triton, you don’t get all the brilliant colors like it's sibling S73 series. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful black drives that has promises of speed and large data capacity. Worth mentioning about the Triton is that it's enclosure is comprised of metal and plastic (primarily the former), giving it a solid and sturdy feel. This is particularly great for those that are a bit clumsy and have the dropsies.

The drive has a shape that is not much different from many other flash drives on the market, as it is long and slender. On the backside at the leading edge is a handy loop to attach a lanyard or keyring to, which it's nice to see it incorporated into the metal casing as it will not so easily break off like many of you no doubt have had the displeasure of experiencing.

The top of the drive displays the company name with logo. Yet what really dominates the top of the unit is the slider that is use to retract the USB connector. When closed you don’t see anything, but once opened the slider portion reveals the drive's max storage capacity.

On the reverse side we see the metal that I mentioned earlier. It is brushed aluminum, but still smooth to the touch. Near the end of the unit there is some product information that is difficult to read, but one thing that can easily (and proudly) be made out is that it is made in the USA. Also we see the lanyard attachment closer up.

Conclusion

The Lexar Triton Jump Drive is an impressive little flash drive capable of impressive speeds across both USB 3.0 and the now-aging USB 2.0 protocols. These speeds are a plus if you are one that needs to transfer the data and move on to the next location quickly. Since receiving the drive I've moved quite a lot of files, including 9k worth of photos of my twins, as well as numerous movie files. Using this drive was far easier and less time consuming compared to the numerous slower USB 2.0 drives I have laying around.

The Triton visually is a great looking drive, neither big, or clunky. Just the way we like it. The build quality is outstanding to say the least. The mixture of metal with some plastic gives it a sturdy, heavy-duty sense about it.

The Triton is not going to be priced like many of the cheaper USB 2.0 models you see on the shelves at your local electronic store. The 32GB model we tested goes online for about $62, making it not the cheapest solution, but if speed is your thing a drive like this is worth it.

The Triton could be considered a nice holiday gift for a loved one. A nice stocking stuffer. My wife has already laid claims on this one.
