OCZ VX500 512GB SSD Review
Posted by Paul Malfy on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 - 8:00am
There was one point where an SSD was a great addition to their systems, for those who could afford it. However, today, with solid state drives becoming so cheap, they have almost become a necessity. Whether it’s just a boot drive, or you plan to replace your mechanical drives, there are SSDs that can fit into any budget. However, there are several things to take into consideration when buying an SSD. Aside from the capacity of the drive, you should also consider the endurance of the drive, or how long it will last, the overall performance of the drive and even the warranty. The people over at TOSHIBA would agree. Since most SATA SSDs have all but saturated the interface, essentially maxing out the speed that a SATA SSD can achieve, a consumer must look at the other features of a drive to make an educated decision. This is why their OCZ VX500 not only advertises speeds near as fast as the SATA interface can handle, but also excellent endurance and one of the best warranty programs in the business. I’d like to thank the people at TOSHIBA for sending ProClockers their 512 GB VX500 for this review. So, let’s take a look at the OCZ VX500 from TOSHIBA and see if it does everything its advertised to do.

OCZ’s Take on the VX500
Designed for mainstream desktops and notebooks, the Toshiba OCZ VX500 SATA SSDs provide a faster, more responsive computing, gaming, and application experience compared to traditional hard disk drives (HDDs). Prioritizing storage endurance1, the Toshiba MLC NAND flash-based VX500 series is suitable for users with write-intensive PC environments seeking well-balanced speed and features that will take system performance to the next level.
Mechanical hard disk drives limit system speed and deprive users of experiencing the full potential of their notebook or desktop. Toshiba OCZ VX500 SSDs are the quick and simple way to upgrade your PC’s performance.
Excellent MLC Endurance
Is endurance important to you? We thought so. Equipped with MLC, the VX500 series offers endurance ratings from 74 to 592 terabytes written (TBW)2.
When it comes to real world applications, your VX500 drive will thrive. Imagine faster boot-ups, file transfers, game level loading, and data access compared to your lag-prone hard disk drive.
Benefits Beyond Speed
More than just a speedy storage, Toshiba OCZ VX500 SSDs also offer improved durability and power consumption over traditional hard disk drives, elevating your mobile computing experience.
Quality from the Inside Out
DIYers have more than just a need for speed, and that’s reliability. With Toshiba expertise built into every VX500 drive, you can expect quality hardware, firmware, and a 5-year Advanced Warranty Program3 you can trust.
Free Data Migration Software
Bundled with Acronis® True Image™ 2016 cloning software key to easily transfer your OS, applications, and data from your old hard disk drive or SSD.
What is MLC NAND?
MLC NAND flash is a flash memory technology using multiple levels per cell to allow more bits to be stored using the same number of transistors. In single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash technology, each cell can exist in one of two states, storing one bit of information per cell. Most MLC NAND flash memory has four possible states per cell, so it can store two bits of information per cell. This reduces the amount of margin separating the states and results in the possibility of more errors. Multi-level cells which are designed for low error rates are sometimes called enterprise MLC.
