A Closer Look

Although it’s a smaller card than the STRIX series, the ASUS GTX 1060 OC edition looks like the STRIX cards. It uses the same IP5X Certified Wing Blade fans. This means the fans in GeForce GTX 1060 graphics cards are certified under the International Protection Marking (IP code) as IP5X dust resistant for improved reliability and a longer lifespan. These fans deliver maximum air flow and improved 105% static pressure over the heat sink. This all happens while operating at 3X quieter volumes than reference cards. The ASUS GTX 1060 OC ran, under load, at around 40-45 decibels. This is in part to the cards 0dB fan technology. If the card is under 60°C, the fans don’t spin. ASUS’s DirectCU II cooling technology offers a 220%-larger area for heat-dissipation over the reference card. This gives the card a 30% increase in cooling performance over the Founder’s Edition.

The ASUS GTX 1060 OC edition has 1280 CUDA Cores with a boost clock of 1809 MHz in Gaming Mode and 1847 in OC Mode. Modes can be switched in GPU Tweak II. This card has 6 GB of GDDR5 on a 192-bit memory bus. In gaming mode, the memory runs at 9026 MHz, and 9100 MHz in OC mode. The ASUS GTX 1060 OC edition has the memory running at 9 Gbps, compared to 8 Gbps on the reference model. With GPU Boost 3.0, this card hit a max speed of 2145 MHz.

With VR being such a focus with gaming these days, ASUS decided to make the 1060 OC Edition with VR friendly ports. The ports consist of a single DVI-D port, 2 x HDMI and 2 x DisplayPort. This is great for VR, not so much if you like to run NVIDIA Surround. Personally, I would have preferred the DVI Port be replaced. The back plate on the 1060 OC is simple. It’s all black with the ASUS logo across the bottom. The DirectCU II cooler overlaps the PCB by a few inches.

Here you can see just how much the cooler hangs over the PCB. It’s a small card, but it has a beefy cooler.

The GDDR5 memory is Samsung memory, so you know its top quality.

The GTX 1060 is based on the GeForce Pascal, or GP-106 GPU.

Even this GTX 1060 uses the same Chokes and Mosfets as the higher-end STRIX cards.

An excellent feature of all ASUS graphic cards is that they are manufactured using their Auto-Extreme Technology. This process is exclusive to ASUS and 100% automated and incorporates the highest quality materials. This also ensures that consistency while making the graphics cards. It also eliminates the human error side of things. Finally, this new manufacturing process is more environmental friendly by reducing power consumption of the plant by almost 50% as well as eliminating chemicals.
