sapphire radeon hd 5670 ultimateToday, we will be looking at Sapphire’s latest video card creation. The new arrival is the Radeon HD 5670 Ultimate. The whole Radeon HD 5XXX series has been a real hit for ATI especially when it comes down to HD 5870 and HD 5970 which both put ATI back on top of the performance hill. Put like many of us we can’t afford to fork out $350 plus for a video card. So, we must settle for what our wallets can give us.

But with the Ultimate Radeon HD 5670 you will not be settling but getting a nice performing video card with all the features of the HD 5XXX series at an afford price. One feature that I personally cannot over look is the passively cooled GPU. With this card you get a decent gaming card, low power consumption and quietness. All three a big plus in my book.

Sapphire’s take on the Radeon HD 5670 Ultimate

“Building on its reputation for special editions and silent cooled graphics cards, SAPPHIRE Technology has just introduced the ULTIMATE Edition of the SAPPHIRE HD 5670, boasting the full performance and features of the fan cooled models, but with a totally silent heat pipe cooler.

The SAPPHIRE HD 5670 ULTIMATE has 400 Stream Processors and sports 1GB of the latest DDR5 memory. With clock speeds of 775MHz core and 1000MHz (4GHz effective) for the memory, it delivers the same performance as fan cooled models, but with a totally silent heat pipe cooler, making it the fastest silent cooled graphics card available today.”

Closer look

The absolute first thing you will notice about the Ultimate is its rather large passive heat sink when compared to the rest of the GPU.  The heat sink is made of aluminum and covers the top side of the video card cooling the 40nm GPU and the memory modules. Three heat pipes are uses to dissipate heat from the first heat sink to a secondary one that sites just a top the video card.

The video card itself is a single slot solution but due to the over-sized cooler two slots will be taken in the installation process. In many of the cases this card would be used it taking two slots should not be an issue.

And just like the big brothers the HD 5670 just offers video connection in the form of HDMI, display port and DVI. For those that plan on building a new HTPC or upgrading the GPU in your current unit the HDMI port is 1.3 compliant making for brilliant 1080P playback and high rate of bit rates through audio. A must for a home theatre setup. And also like the others the HD 5670 does support ATI’s Eyefinity for multi-display gaming setups.

The HD 5670 supports PCIe 2.1 at x16 and also can be connected to a second ATI card for Crossfire. There is no secondary power connections on this card as it draws all its power from the motherboard.

Capcom Resident Evil 5
Capcom officially announced Resident Evil 5 on July 20, 2005. Jun Takeuchi, the director of Onimusha and producer of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, took over producer duties from Hiroyuki Kobayashi. Keiji Inafune, who served as promotional producer for Resident Evil 2 and executive producer for the PlayStation 2 version of Resident Evil 4, oversaw the project.[26] In February 2007, members of Capcom’s Clover Studio were also called upon to help develop the game.

Capcom Street Fighter 4
All the characters and environments in Street Fighter IV are rendered as 3D models with polygons, similar to the Street Fighter EX sub-series Capcom produced with Arika. However, there are a couple of key differences. Art director and character designer Daigo Ikeno, who previously worked on Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, added cel-shading to give them a hand-drawn look, with visual effects accented in calligraphic strokes, ink smudges and ink sprays during the fights.

Power Consumption

Overclocking

We took a slightly different approach to overclocking this video card and will apply it to all the future video card reviews. Like before we allowed ATI's CCC to do all the overclocking just to see how far it could get the Ultime HD 5670. In the end it netted us a overclock of 815MHz on the core and 1050 on the memory. We wanted to see just how much more the Ultimate had in it so we opened up MSI's After Burner which is the best GPU overclocking application out there. After a few hours of playing around with MHz setting for the GPU and ram never touching the voltage we did mange to increase the overclock on the GPU to a whooping 850MHz while the ram frequency never passed 1050MHz stable.

Conclusion

I can see the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 Ultimate making a big splash with those that are looking to complete a system built on absolute quiet. Chances are these people building such a system are home theatre enthusiants but for those that wish to do a little bit of gaming may like to know the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 Ultimate is capable to play a fair share of games. Yes, gameplay will be hold in check as the HD 5670 is not the fastest card out there but with moderate settings you will be able to frag your way out of trouble in your favorite FPS. RPG and other strategy games will not be an issue with this card I was able to StarCraft 2 without having to dail down the settings at all.

Still the Ultimate's ideal placement would be in a home theatre box as it is a no noise solution. I don't think there is anyone out there that would not want a card like this in their living room PC. Because of the 1.3 compliant HDMI port you are able to get full 1080P support while hearing the best in sounds through the same HDMI port.

And if hooking a PC up to your television is not your cup of tea, you do have the option of Eyefinity which is one of the best visual displays option you can have if wanting to game like a pro.
