We are talking triple M.2 slots, Intel Optane supported, USB 3.1 Gen 2 bot Type-A and Type-C, 60A power chokes 11 phase power, metal covered reinforced video card slots, Nichicon 12K Black Caps, and Asrock Hyper BCLK Engine III. Yes, it’s impossible to beat Asrocks price/feature set and seldom do you see any manufacturers board performing better!

The ASRock X299 Killer SLI/ac LGA 2066 Intel X299 Motherboard is the real deal and if you want a premium motherboard without that nasty $500 premium price look no farther Asrock has you covered 7 ways from Sunday! From the matte black PCB to the RGB feature ASRock has thought of everything, Dual-band Wifi, 3 way SLI or Xfire, Dr Mos, Alloy Armor and 8 memory slots up to 4400MHz! If nothing else impresses you 4400MHz memory support should just knock your socks off. For you memory hogs, you know who you are, you can fit up to 128 whopping GB of memory on this beauty.

We’ve seen boards that cost double the MSRP of $155 on the ASRock X299 Killer SLI/ac LGA 2066 Intel X299 Motherboard that doesn’t deliver half the features or quality. Don’t miss out on this review you could end up spending far too much on far too few features!

A Closer Look

Board wise, the first thing we noticed was the metal reinforced GPU slots spaced for the common 2.5 slot ginormous GPU’s. The RGB feature on this board is pretty minimal but enough to color coordinate with other components in your system.

The 8 ram bank design is pretty standard X299 fare but still a much-appreciated feature.

We simply love the 3 M.2 slots and ASRock didn’t even have to resort to M.2 slots sticking up from the board’s edge where they can easily be damaged and easily damage the motherboard while working in the case.

The back of the board Is fairly unremarkable as most motherboard backs are, we would like to see RGB LEDs on the backs of RGB boards, not just one little LED strip so the Manu can use the name RGB.

The Intel 802.11ac WiFi (2.4G / 5G WiFi) module which supports wireless networks and Bluetooth v4.2 wasn’t unexpected but we always like a good solid dual-band WiFi and frankly boards without at least built-in WiFi just can’t receive our highest award. We would prefer triple band WiFi but on a board this price we can’t complain.

We see that there are 4 PCIe 16x slots and a PCIe 1x slot.

Peeking out beside the CPU socket you’ll find 11 phase power which should be enough for some massive overclocking.

Over on the right, we have some fine gold capacitors generally used for the audio portion of motherboards which on this ASRock board happens to be the Realtek ALC1220 with 7.1 channel HD audio, Nichicon Fine Gold Series Audio Caps, 120dB SNR DAC with Differential Amplifier and a 15μ Gold Audio Connector. ALC1220 isn’t bad and this isn’t a horribly expensive board but we would really have preferred some Sound Blaster Audio on this puppy. Of course, at $155 you aren’t going to get golden monkeys flying out the rear audio ports but motherboard audio should be a major priority.

Pushing in you get a great look at the Ultra M.2 slot(s) and you find 3 of those on this nicely outfitted board.

Getting up close and personal with the CPU slot you see that 11 Phase power we spoke of earlier and the high-quality 12K Nichicon capacitors.

As you can see 2066 brings us back to dual socket hold down levers.

General Performance Testing

All benchmarks are run using stock settings on the i7-7800X CPU, which leaves Turbo Boost 3.0 enabled for some automatic boosting. We noticed it frequently running as high as 4.3 GHz under light to moderate loads, and 3.8-4.0Ghz under moderate to heavy loads. The ram was manually clocked to its XMP rating of 3200 MHz @ 14-16-16-39 speeds to avoid applying any automatic overclocks.

Games where ran at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and higher settings enabled.

PCMark 8

Fritz Chess is a benchmark in which a fictitious game of chess is played. As each move has to be calculated by the computer, it is an excellent test of CPU muscle. Due to some incompatibilities with some recent CPU’s, we limit to the physical number of cores rather than threads.

7-Zip

The benchmark shows a rating in MIPS (million instructions per second). The rating value is calculated from the measured speed, and it is normalized with results of Intel Core 2 CPU with multi-threading option switched off. So if you have modern CPU from Intel or AMD, rating values in single-thread mode must be close to real CPU frequency. There are two tests, compression with LZMA method and decompression with LZMA method. Once the total passes reaches 100, the score is taken

3DMark – Fire Strike

Grand Theft Auto: V

Metro: Last Light

Developed by 4A games and published by Deepsilver, Metro: Last Light uses the 4A game engine. At its highest settings, the 4A game engine is capable of bringing all but the most extreme gaming systems to their knees.

Thief

“Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach.”

Thief was developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by SQUARE ENIX, Eidos Interactive. The newest game in our benchmark suite, Thief is also one of the most demanding and has the highest recommended system requirements. Those heavy requirements allow it to use the Unreal 3 game engine to great effect. It also features AMD’s Mantle API, as well as Microsoft’s common DirectX 11 API.

OverClocking

Well here we are and for us enthusiasts, it usually comes down to two things on Motherboards. Features and OCing. Does this board have all the features I need, Nay not need but all the features I want now, might want in the future and a few features I haven;t even thought of using. Second will this thing overclock my CPU until it screams and sweat pours off my forehead wondering if she’s gonna blow. Even worse if our CPU stinks and the OC itself will blow.

Well, our 7800X hex core steps in at a modest 3500MHz and turbos to 4000MHz so we didn’t know what to expect. Now keep in mind we are using a 240mm AIOradiatorr setup on the 7800X probably not ideal.

We decided to get brave and try a moderat OC the 4600MHz

Low and behold 4600MHz on 6 Cores and at 1.119V Stable!

And there she is at 5000MHz at a mind-numbing 1.369V but running 5GHz, now this checked stable for 30 minutes but at times single cores would hit 78-80 degrees then drop back down quickly but the core right next to it would read 40oC lower. It was stable and it felt like the 7800X had more to give but with 240mm of a radiator, we were stopping at 5000MHz. Think about it 5000MHz who’s gonna complain about it on a hex core.

Final Thoughts & Conclusion

Well, it’s been a long time coming and it’s been a long hard road with the ASRock X299 Killer SLI. There have been ups and downs, the stuff you never hear about but live through when buying a motherboard. The ups include the Asrock X299 fired up on the first try and we were into BIOS in just a few seconds after firing it up. The board felt very responsive and BIOS was clean and easy to understand and navigate. We achieved our overclock manually but there were working profiles on the chip up to 5GHz albeit though they were at scary high VCore voltages. Working with BIOS we achieved lower voltage OC’s but the one-click option is there for new overclockers and they are a good starting point to jump-start the OCing process.

The board is nicely equipped for $155 but we missed having on, off and restart buttons but we might be a bit spoiled. We did have to tinker with PCIe drives and resorted to using the ample (3) M.2 slots. but on all for $155 and hitting 5GHz we;d say this is a great bargain board with enough features to keep most end users happy.

The Dual band wifi is a nice addition and 11 phase CPU power is a luxury plus you get some RGB bling but it’s not a board for the high-end connoisseur. Don;t forget the vast majority of people buying high-end motherboards don’t use all the bright fancies. The ASRock X299 has a few of the bright fancies we all love but ASRock spent the money where it counts on good solid high-quality components.

Good high-quality components like 16k hour capacitors using black Nichicon caps and even fine gold caps on the audio circuits. Great BIOS with a ton of options but intuitive enough to navigate without a lot of funbling around.

There’s a lot of features packed on the ASRock X299 Killer SLI/ac and ASRock spent thier hardware money wisely on good solid hardware not on a bunch of plastic junk covering PCB. Some on off buttons would have been good but we got to 5GHz stable so on the budget/luxury side of the equation I’d say we got a winner in both budget and luxury,
