Introduction to the BitFenix Recon Internet-Connected Fan Controller

I really love the way that PC hardware heading. It seems that newer companies are popping up all over the place. And with them we are seeing fresh ideas. And many of the companies that have been around for some time are borrowing these ideas to brighten up their own line-up of products. BitFenix is one of the newer companies we are talking about.

BitFenix has blessed the PC world with many great ideas in their short of existence. The first was the Colossus now that case was definitely different from anything on the market. And then there was one of the features of their cases like the Colossus that was a first and that was the rubberized coating to protect the case. One other idea was they made sleeved cabling very affordable with their Alchemy products.

Now they are hitting the market with another product and that is the Recon fan controller. Now, what can be added to a fan controller to make it different from the rest? How about making it capable of connecting to the internet? By connecting to the internet you are allowed to monitor and control different aspects of your PC.

Features

Internet Connected for Mobile Devices
Recon is the world’s first internet-connected fan controller. Once setup, Recon allows you to monitor and control your system fans and temps using any internet-connected device, including smartphones, tablets, laptops. Best of all, Recon is not platform dependent and only requires a simple web browser to operate. Ideal for users who run their systems 24/7, Recon gives you total control and peace of mind – no matter where you are.

Touchscreen Controls
Keeping tabs on your system and making adjustments has never been easier with the Recon’s easy-to-use touchscreen controls. The touchscreen offers system temperatures and fan speeds at-a-glance, and even alerts you in the event of any temperatures getting too high. The intuitive layout makes it easy to adjust your fan speeds to adapt to any situation.

Dual Processor Technology
Recon employs two custom microprocessors that interact with your system for accurate real-time status monitoring and control. Working with your motherboard, these microprocessors connect to your system and enable you to control your system’s fans both locally and via mobile devices.
System Status Monitoring
Keep tabs on your system at all times with Recon’s robust system monitoring capabilities. Fan speeds are displayed at-a-glance, and both fan voltages and threshold temperatures are all right there to help keep you up-to-date on the health of your rig.

Five Channel Thermal Controls
Recon gives you five thermal channels to couple your system fans with. Each channel delivers up to 10W of power, enough to drive even the largest fans!

Customizable Profiles
Program your favorite settings and recall them with a single button press! Set up an entertainment profile to keep fans spinning slowly during a movie, or a gaming profile that spins up your fans full speed when the action heats up. Recon allows you to customize your own profiles and recall up to three of them on-the-fly, allowing you to be ready for any situation.

BitFenix SofTouch™ Bezel
Recon also comes with signature BitFenix SofTouch™ surface treatment. This smooth rubbery coating not only feels pleasing to the touch, but also lends a superb matte finish that makes it a handsome addition to virtually any rig.

Closer look

A good fan controller is one of those devices that you have go without especially if you run your PC under several different environments like silent mode and then jumping to gaming mode when it is time to start blowing up stuff. Having a controller will allow you to adjust your fans to whatever you want to run to fit your needs.

The Recon is one of BitFenix’s front fan controllers and it is a good one. The front of the controller is covered with BitFenix’s patented SofTouch rubberized surface. The surface is an ideal fit for all of BitFenix’s cases as well as many others on the market.

You will not see much while the Recon has no power. Everything is pretty black except for the logo and product name etched into the corner of the device.

Looking at the unit from the sides we see that the rest of it is made of steel and designed to fit into any empty 5.25” bay.

The rear of the Recon consists of what all other fan controller have and that is several pieces of EPROM chip, resistors and capacitors. There are five 3-pin connections representing each of the five channels. Each of the channels can support up to 10 watts. Plus, there are five 2-pin connections for the thermal sensors.

Here we have the various cabling that comes with the Recon.

Testing

With the Recon installed you see that it shows a wealth of information. It begins with stating the mode of the channel which is either Auto or Manual. If you set to Manual you can make adjustments using the +/- keys. Temp and RPM of that channels probe and fan are displayed.

Below we have a shot of the software that is used to control the Recon from another source.

We see that it ran from my Android-based phone without any issues. There is a good chance that the user will have to enabling port forwarding on their router if using one.

Conclusion

The BitFenix Recon fan controller is a very unique when it comes to such an item. We have never encountered another controller like it. But the question that may come up when talking about the Recon is, why would someone need a fan controller that could connect to the internet. Well, the one answer that I came up almost immediately is a lot of people but a lot of money into their system and in many of these cases the machine may run 24/7 and if that is the case, you can keep tabs on the computer while away.

The Recon is a no-brainer when it comes to installing and connecting everything. Some may have to go through the extra steps of enabling port forwarding on their router. This is usually a simple process that can be completed in just a couple of minutes. If you have no knowledge of the procedure, Googling should come up with everything you need to know to get it done.

The BitFenix is no more expensive than any other fan controller on the market. At $40, you can have a way to monitor your system from anywhere at anytime.
