Few notebook PCs are as synonymous with mobile workstations in the world of business as the ThinkPad W Series. That’s why we were shocked to hear that Lenovo will no longer offer the popular W Series workstations … because the company just unveiled a brand new family of mobile workstation starting with the ThinkPad P50 and P70. Lenovo promises these new ThinkPad P Series systems are the best-performing and most reliable mobile workstations available and the editors of NotebookReview got the chance to take a close look at several pre-production samples.

The new top-of-the-line ThinkPad P70 is a 17-inch mobile workstation designed for professionals in demanding industries ranging from media and entertainment to oil and gas. This system features the most memory and storage Lenovo has ever put inside a mobile workstation; up to 64GB of DDR4 ECC memory and the ability to handle up to four storage devices with up to a terabyte of SSD storage, utilizing the latest PCIe technology for speeds up to five times faster than current SATA technology.

In terms of office connectivity, the ThinkPad P70 also comes with two Intel Thunderbolt 3 ports for those people who need to transfer massive amounts of data as quickly as possible. The 17-inch screen is available as either a 4K UHD display or optional FHD touch display.

The ThinkPad P50 is Lenovo’s thinnest and lightest mobile workstation to date. The P50 is the replacement for the ThinkPad W541 and includes a 15.6-inch UHD 4K display and is certified to run the most requested Independent Software Vendor (ISV) applications.

Both the new ThinkPad P50 and P70 are mil-spec tested for maximum durability (as we’ve come to expect from Lenovo workstations), and will also be the first ThinkPads to come equipped with the latest Intel Xeon Processor E3-1500M v5 product family.

Both systems feature NVIDIA Quadro GPUs for discrete graphics. Lenovo also offers the ThinkPad P Series with X-Rite Pantone color calibration to keep colors accurate throughout the life of the product.

The ThinkPad P50 and P70 feature a brand new “FLEX Performance Cooling” system. The dual-fan design means cooler, quieter and faster performance; allowing the fans to be automatically controlled as dictated by the needs of the application or giving the user the ability to set the fans on maximum and push the system harder and for longer periods of time to get more work done. Since this is a dual-fan cooling system both the GPU and CPU have a dedicated cooling fan, but if the graphics get too hot then the CPU fan can kick in as well to help keep temperatures down thanks to a copper heat sink connecting both fans.

The new Lenovo ThinkPad P Series mobile workstations will be available starting in Q4 2015 through Lenovo business partners and on http://www.lenovo.com.
