Sandfish Stardew Valley: Fishing Guide

Sandfish Stardew Valley Fishing Guide

For this Ultimate Sandfish Stardew Valley Fishing Guide, we’ll be revealing how to catch this rare fish and what you can do with it!

Last Updated: October 2021

Stardew Valley is a game known for its calming atmosphere and lovable cast of characters. Players get to live a quiet life as a farmer, planting crops and doing a whole slew of other things in the scenic countryside.

For example, fishing! Now, I won’t lie. It took me a while to master Stardew Valley’s fishing minigame. Sure, Carp and Smallmouth Bass are easy catches, but Tiger Trouts and Lava Eels? Those were an absolute nightmare. But that’s not all. Apart from battling with slippery fish, you also had the Community Center to worry about. I remember thinking “Where in the world do I find that blasted Sandfish?” Well, now that I do know where it is, I’m sharing it with all of you, so you don’t suffer like I did.

Spoiler warning for this section! Skip over if you don’t want a major quest spoiled.

The Sandfish can only be caught in the Calico Desert, which is inaccessible at the beginning of the game. The player unlocks the area by completing the Vault Bundle for the Community Center.

Completing the Vault Bundle requires you to pay a total of 42,500g. Unlike other Bundles, which require a collection of crops, forageables, or the like, theVault Bundle requires four instalments of gold. They are as follows:

  • 2,500g
  • 5,000g
  • 10,000g
  • 25,000g

Once you complete the Vault Bundle, Junimos will repair the Bus overnight. This then allows the player to travel to the desert, which is on the northwest corner of the world’s map.

When you arrive at the Calico Desert head west to the area above the road. You’ll find a small pond there. There’s also a smaller one directly south of your starting point, but you’re less likely to catch the Sandfish there, so stick to the other pond. Luckily for you, the Sandfish is available all year-round, so you can fish for it to your heart’s content!

Alternatively, you might find a Sandfish for sale at the Traveling Cart for any price between 225g and 1,000g.

When you finally manage to fix the Bus and catch a Sandfish, here’s a list of what you can do with it.

Specialty Fish Bundle

The Sandfish is a required item for completing the Stardew Valley Community Center. You’ll need it for the Specialty Fish Bundle, which requires four rare fish, including the Sandfish!. Upon completing the Specialty Fish Bundle, you’ll get five Dish O’ The Seafood items.

Sandfishes can also be used to create the following:

  • Sashimi (Any Fish; restores 75 Stamina and 33 HP)
  • Maki Roll (Any Fish, Seaweed, Rice; restores 100 Stamina and 45 HP)
  • Quality Fertilizer (Sap x2, Any Fish; used on tilled soil to make quality crops)

Additionally, Sandfishes can be requested in the following quests:

  • The Item Delivery quest can appear randomly when you check the bulletin board in front of Pierre’s store. This can be offered by anyone and will reward the player with 225g upon completion.
  • Fish Pond quests for two Sandfishes can be offered by any of the following fish currently in your pond: Dorado, Lingcod, Pike. By granting their request, the maximum capacity of your Fish Pond will grow from seven to ten fish.
Other Uses

Finally, here are some other things you can do with Sandfishes that aren’t covered in the last few sections:

  • Using the Sandfish with the Sewing Machine produces the Fish Shirt.
  • You can also place Sandfishes in Fish Ponds. They reproduce every four days and can grant you Sandfish Roe. And by the time they reach ten in population, you might also gain Cactus Seeds from them.

The first time I found the desert, I was shocked that there was more content to Stardew Valley. I thought I’d explored all there was and found most of everything that needed to be found. Boy, was I wrong? (Looking at you, Skull Cavern.) Still, it was fun to experience a completely new area and find the last fish that I needed for my Specialty Fish Bundle. Hopefully, this Sandfish Stardew Valley Guide helps you on your quest to finish the Community Center as well!

Stardew Valley is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS Vita. To learn about the download requirements, check out the game’s official website. But if you already have it and are still looking for fishing tips, why not check out our Chub fishing guide as well? The common fish has surprisingly plenty of uses!
