Lancool DragonLord PC-K56 Recently Lancool has released a new series of cases called Dragonlord. The Dragonlord series consist of four models: K62, K60, K58 and the lower model K56. Each of the cases has a few more options than the lower models but all generally share similar front facials which is a predominantly mesh. The model we will be concentrating on will be the K56. Introduction of the Lancool DragonLord PC-K56

For a lot of people the high-end cases from companies like Silverstone and Lian Li. Cases that many of us feel that are the best looking and most functional on the market. For so long I looked at these cases as the Royce Roses of the industry. I am sure you know what I mean. You see someone else with it and you dream about having one yourself one day. If you don’t have that feeling towards a case you may have had it with a processor or a motherboard that was far out of range of your budget.

If you are a fan of such cases from Lian Li then you will be happy that Lian Li produces some really nice and inexpensive cases under another brand. That brand is Lancool. Looking at some of the Lancool cases you see a lot of Lian Li characteristics in the cases. It seems that Lian Li is wanting to satisfy more that the person with extra funds in his/her bank account but the mainstream and budget builders. This is a route that many are taking: Coolermaster, Antec and others.

Features

The hardware installation with Dragon Lord K56 is very easy and simple. The front panel is detachable and they can be removed without tools.

The Dragon Lord K56 is targeted for the LAN party gamers. It is a mid-tower case, which is ideal for the latest graphics cards in combination with the best thermal dynamics. Especially in the advent of adding in new graphics cards, equipped with 8 PCI slots, can hold three or more graphics cards, supports CrossfireX™ and 3-way SLI™.

The new internal layout has the motherboard on top of the power supply unit, which allows for easier access to the motherboard as well as more room above, thus larger CPU coolers can be used. The power supply unit at the button of the case is cooled with fresh cool air directly from the outside of the case, instead of pre-heated air from within. This will bring down the core temperatures and extend the lifespan of the PSU significantly.

To install motherboard require no tools, use tool-less screw to screw a motherboard on case, easily and quickly.

Closer look at the outside

Now the DragonLord is manufacturer by Lian Li under the Lancool marker but don’t look to get all the goodies that you see in the Lian Li lineup. With the K56 you will get your share of plastic and metal. Me personally can go either way. As there are many metal case I love just like there are many aluminum case I like. Many people when asked for recommendations on a case chances are the first response will be an expensive aluminum case when there are some great metal cases available and look just as good as an aluminum. Off my soapbox.

When we remove the K56 from the box the first thing that you will notice is the plastic mesh front. I like the way Lancool dressed up the K56 with the entire height of the front facial is made of strips of black mesh separated by rows of black plastic. The good looks are far from the alien-look cases and extreme gamer cases we are seeing a lot of lately. Like Lian Li the DragonLord series is all class.

Normally I go down the case when describing the front of a case but in the instance I will not actually I can not as the entire front is mesh except for the top because this is where we have to the input ports of the K56. The K56 is a little short on ports are there are only two USB’s and audio ports. Missing are the seldom used fire wire and the newer eSATA ports. Besides the ports there are the usual power and reset buttons located on each end of the small panel.

Each of the DragonLord models are offered with windows as an option. The model we have here is the non-windowed option so each of the sides are made of typical solid sheets of metal.

Lancool paid a lot of attention to the rear of the K56 as ventilation was taking seriously. Lancool slotted the expansion slot covers to aid in the warm air exhaust. This is one small feature that a lot of companies is taking into mind. Also notice that the K56 has eight expansion slots instead of seven. This is to help support of multi-card setups.

The top half of the rear consist of the a large 120mm cooling fan with round rubber covered holes for water-cooling tubing. In order to eliminate any unnecessary vibration the fans are secured using rubber grommets.

The power supply is mounted at the bottom of the case which is becoming a standard nowadays. The more exciting power supply option is inside and not out.

Closer look at the inside

From this image below you can see the Lancool is a metal enclosure just by looking at the color. The medium gray has metal written all over it. The metal helps to make the case very sturdy and rugged. Looking at the inside the layout is very typical. But the building of it is not. More on that later.

Starting with the rear we can see the 120mm cooling fan that aids in the exhaust of warm air. One of the few areas of the case that is not tool-less is here as the expansion slot covers are screwed in place.

The bottom of the case has a lot going on. The power supply sits on rubber seals to once again help with interior noise. Under the power supply sitting area are vented large enough to allow power supplies with large fans to do their job. Just beyond this area is a plastic cable organizer which is ingenious.

The motherboard tray is ready for you to mount you motherboard on as the stand-offs are already screwed into the tray. The tray also has several openings to aid in organizing all your power supply cables. Even in the area of the CPU socket there is a large opening to make the transition of CPU coolers painless.

The front of the enclosure has two separate cages for housing 3.5″ and 5.25″ devices. The two top bays of the 5.25″ cage are assembled with quick installation clips. These clips make the installation of optical drives a breeze. The bottom three bays are without. I don’t know the reason for this but I would have like to see them all included with them. The HDD rack uses their own quick mounting mechanisms which we will see more of in the building process. Just in front of the HDD cage is another 120mm cooling fan.

Building of the DragonLord K56

We started with the mounting of the optical device. Sliding in the drive, watching for the holes on the side of the drive to appear we were able to lock the drive in place using the locking mechanism.

Lancool DragonLord PC-K56

When it comes to the power supply you have the option of screwing the unit in or securing it using this locking bar. We found the locking bar the quicker option.

The HDD is secured in a different fashion than the optical drive. Four screws with rubber grommets are screwed into the drive and then the drive is slid into the slots of the drive cage. Once all drives are in place sliding the drive bar down locks the drives in place.

Lastly, we have the installation of the motherboard which has its own tool-less feature. Instead of using standard screws to hold the board in place, Lancool uses thumbscrews to do this.

Conclusion

Lancool DragonLord PC-K56

This is my first experience with a Lancool and I am happy to say that it was a good one. For a case offers as much as the K56 does you can’t go wrong. For the low asking price of less than $65 you get more than you would in a higher price case. The K56 is a very handsome case that resembles that of the Lian Li offerings but with a budget price tag.

The quality the K56 is one of the biggest pluses of the enclosure. The most plastic and most metal tower is made very well. Its sturdy and durable. Coupled with the tool-less options like the motherboard thumbscrews, easy drive mounting and power supply install bracket you have the making of a legendry casing and one that should last a long time. For the neat freak in all of us the K56 offers some great cable management options.

We highly recommended this case to anyone wanting a great case and on a budget.

highly recommended best value
