Closer look

Check around on any large forum and look around at some of the signatures displaying the poster’s rig. There are high chances that many of them will contain just a single mid to high-range GPU. Where the possible abnormality may come is in the power supply. Often you will find very high power units backing up a rig that really doesn’t need it.

Granted there is nothing wrong with this. I, myself am in the same situation. I am currently housing a 800W PSU when I could easily get away with a 600 watter or maybe less. One counter argument is that it leaves plenty of room for upgrading and future proofing.

With good quality units like the Lepa G650, we are looking at today rest assured you are in safe hand with a system containing a GPU like the GTX 580/670 or Radeon 6970/7950. The G650 is an Enermax-made unit that is rated at 80Plus Gold standards. And provides today’s entire range load and under current and load protections. There are two other models in the family and they are 750W and 850W.

The G650 consist of a nice but rough coating of a black painted surface with gold trim. Kind of plain on the most part.

The sides of the unit consist of the Lepa trademark and the series name with wattage level all in gold.

Along the top of the unit is the product sticker reciting of the specifications of the rails. Stated is the unit has a single 12v rail that has a 62A output.

The G650 uses a standard C13 style power connector. Also, there is no power switch on this model.

On the bottom of the unit is a 140mm two-ball bearing cooling fan that is PWM controlled.

The G650is a semi-modular unit with the real number of cables being permanent which are just the two main power connectors to the motherboard. Everything else is flat and detachable from the unit. 

The modular cables are covered in a rubber-like coat that hugs each individual wire inside the cable. This also makes the cable flat and easy to manage.

Results

We know that testing a power supply on a loaded system is not the very best way to do so, but you cannot overlook real world testing. Other sites have methods that use thousands of dollars in equipment to provide them greater detail. We have a trusty digital multimeter. Those sites and the methods they use should be the true means of determining how good a power supply really is; however, we feel that showing you how it performs under real world conditions is also a valid measure of its performance.

Conclusion

The Lepa G650 is one of those power supplies that many could benefit from. Even with some of the high-powered video cards being released, huge wattage power supplies are not really needed in most cases. Cards like the Nvidia GTX 580/670 as well as Radeon HD 7950/6970 would do just fine with this 650 watt power unit.

And not only do you get the benefits of the power but the efficiency as well. At the Gold level there isn’t much more than could be asked for in a power supply. Ok, there are the Platinum units but at what cost. And what else that matters is in order to get to the Gold standard Lepa use high quality parts and components to get there.

At $109 at the Egg, the G650 is one of the most affordable Gold power supplies in the wattage range but $30 on average. Even the G750 is $129 making it a great deal if looking for power.
