Overwatch Tier List

In this article, we will be presenting you with the ultimate Overwatch Tier List that will continually evolve with the game.

If you are an avid gamer, you’ve probably played (even a bit) or at least heard of Overwatch.

This game created by Blizzard has entertained us for hours and keeps on doing so by tirelessly evolving and changing, tweaking the heroes and their abilities, thereby “forcing” the meta to change. Gone are the days when you could dominate with 3-4 Tanks in a team.

We all remember the famous Nano-visor/Nano-blade stats when we stumbled upon hearing Genji’s war cry. The meta is always evolving and we think it’s about time we created an Overwatch Tier List about the current stage of the meta, seeing which heroes are viable and which ones are terrib… not so viable.

OVERWATCH TIER LIST: CHARACTER DETAILS

S-TIER

Overwatch Tier List

Does this Tier need explaining? Just pick them and you will see their power.

  • WRECKING BALL

Classification: Tank
Health Pool: 600 (Health: 500 | Armor: 100)

Of course, Wrecking-ball has to be included in this list. We all have a love-hate relationship with Wrecking-ball. When he is in our team and knows what he is doing, we love the chaos he is creating, a real menace though when he is on the enemies’ side.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Quad Cannons -This is Wrecking Ball’s primary weapon which is meant for short engagements due to its low damage, fast fire rate, and low ammo. While using Roll ability,  these are automatically reloaded.
Grappling Claw

Wrecking Ball -uses this for his mobility ability, enabling him to swing for pillars or terrains.

While swinging, Wrecking Ball can deal damage and knock enemies down, but it also makes him vulnerable to stuns or knockback effects.
Adaptive Shield

For every nearby enemy, Wrecking Ball will gain a personal shield.

ABILITIES
Roll- The ability that turns Wrecking Ball into a ball, making his speed much faster than other heroes. Take advantage of this skill to disengage from a fight.

Piledriver- While in the air, Wrecking Ball can slam downwards and deal damage to nearby enemies—they are thrown upwards, making them easy targets to Quad Cannons.

Minefield- This is Wrecking Ball’s ultimate ability which is used to deny an area objective and distract the enemy team.

If used while he’s mid-air, the mines are more spread out, covering more area.

  • ZENYATTA

Classification: Support
Health Pool: 200 (Health: 50 | Armor: 150)

As a support hero that can be left on his own in battle, it isn’t a surprise that Zenyatta is in this Tier. He has a high DPS and a fairly straightforward tool kit that even newbies can easily get a hang of. Everything the meta requires, Zenyatta offers it. Plus, it feels great to hit his orbs.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Orb of Destruction- The primary weapon of Zenyatta that allows him to shoot fast-moving orb projectiles and deal massive damage to an enemy. It has a charge ability, giving Zenyatta the power to fire up to 5 orbs.

Orb of Discord- This orb can be placed on a target enemy; when it activates, the enemy takes highly increased damage from all sources.

It will be automatically targeting the closest enemy to Zenyatta, but it will be removed when he moves to the Orb to a different target, he loses sight of the enemy after 3 seconds, or if he dies.

Orb of Harmony – This on the other hand can be placed on a target ally. While the orb is activated, the ally will slowly regenerate health.

It will be automatically targeting the closest ally to Zenyatta, but it will be removed when he moves to the Orb to a different target, he loses sight of the ally after 3 seconds, or if he dies.

ABILITIES
Transcendence -Zenyatta’s ultimate ability. Once activated, he can become invulnerable to damage for several seconds. It also creates an aura that will heal any allies standing within it.

While this ability is active, Zenyatta cannot use any other weapons or abilities. He remains targetable, so he can suffer knockbacks but without health damage.

  • D.VA

Classification: Tank
Health Pool: 600 (Health: 300| Armor: 300)

Rejoice, people! Everyone’s favorite superstar D.Va has been resurrected. Before the last changes she received, she wasn’t even close to being playable, with every other tank being a better alternative. Now you can justify picking her into some Dive-compositions. Go get into your enemy’s faces and annoy them, eat up their utilities, bullets, and most importantly their will to live. Her Defense Matrix can be counted on to save the whole team.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Fusion Cannons- These are D.Va’s main weapons on her mech that can fire consistent bullets on a targeted point without needing to reload. The downside is D.Va movement is reduced to 40% while firing.

Effective for close-range, these cannons shot 11 bullets per round so you can hit your targets close, giving them very little chance to escape the hits.

These weapons cannot be used when defense matrix abilitiy is active,

Light Gun -When D.Va’s mech is destroyed, the light gun becomes her main weapon and will still deal considerable damage to enemies wit its fast projectile bullets. This is more effective for long-range shooting than the fusion cannons.

ABILITIES
Defense Matrix- It’s D.Va’s main defensive ability that causes a barrier to pop up from the front of her mech when activated.  It blocks all incoming projectiles for 2 seconds.

Use it as quick protection from strong attacks instead of your main blocking tool.

If retreating from an enemy, activate this ability while moving backward to prevent attacks.

Boosters- Boosters will cause D.Va’s mech to launch upwards into the air, and give her faster movement speed. This can deal melee damage and knockback enemies that collide with D.Va while this ability is active.

RELATED:  Among Us Console Release Dates

Micro Missiles- Launch missiles from D.Va’s mech that travels in a straight line, hitting any solid target it comes into contact with, even D.Va who fired them.

This does not work on a hero with a stun attack, since it can be interrupted.

Self-Detstruct- An ultimate ability ejecting D.Va from her mech, and causing the mech to detonate after three seconds, dealing massive damage in the surrounding area. Successfully using this ability will fully charge D.Va’s Call Mech ability.

Call Mech-Another ultimate ability of D.Va that allows her to call a new mech if her previous one gets destroyed.

  • MOIRA

Classification: Support
Health Pool: 200 (Health: 200 | Armor: 0)

If you are the type who enjoys competitive play, Moira’s healing ability is something you should go after. She has great mobility and short cooldowns, making her one of the most favored characters by low-ranking players. To make the most of what Moira can offer, it’s best to pick her alongside other supports such as Ana and Mercy.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Left Biotic Grasp- Moira can use biotic energy to heal allies in front of her using her left hand.

Right Biotic Grasp -This is a long-range beam weapon that drains enemies’ health, healing Moira and also replenishing her biotic energy.

Biotic Orb- Moira can launch biotic orbs which can either heal allies it passes through (regeneration effect) or deal damage to enemies (decay effect).

ABILITIES
Fade-This ability allows Moira to have an increased speed and allows her to be invulnerable to damage.

While activated, Moira will be unable to use any weapons.

Coalescence -With this ultimate ability, Moira can fire a long-range beam that can either heal allies or damage enemies.

Moira’s biotic energy also passively recharges while coalescence is activated.

  • WINSTON

Classification: Tank
Health Pool: 500 (Health: 350 | Armor: 150)

There is one thing that is always valuable in Overwatch, and that is creating chaos to the backlines of your enemy. Winston is the ideal choice for that, with his high mobility and “2nd life” that his ultimate ability gives him, he is a great choice, especially if you know how to utilize his strengths.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Tesla Cannon

ABILITIES
Jump Pack- This ability allows Winston to leap forward into the air, and upon landing will cause damage to an enemy that he lands on.

Barrier Projector -Winston can create a protective energy dome from this ability. Allies inside the dome will be protected from attacks but can return fire from within it.

Primal Rage- This is Winston’s ultimate ability. When activated, Winston’s health is significantly boosted to 1000 (850 Health | 150 armor) making him extremely hard to kill. This also strengthens his melee attack and allows him to use his Jump Pack ability more frequently. Any other weapons cannot be used while this ability is active.

  • HANZO

Classification: Damage
Health Pool: 200 (Health: 200 | Armor: 0)

Even though the meta is no longer dominated by the snipers, Hanzo continues to be one of the best ways to deal damage. Players who take the time to master Hanzo will surely be rewarded for he has excellent mobility and can deal good damage. Combining mobility with DPS he can erase the squishiest heroes from the game if he lands the sweet, sweet headshots, and if you join together his ultimate with another crowd control ultimate (ex. Zarya’s), well, say goodbye to the enemy’s team.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Storm Bow- This is Hanzo’s main and only weapon, with unlimited ammo and can be used for melee attacks to knock down a target.

ABILITIES
Wall Climb- This ability makes Hanzo able to jump at walls and climb up them up to 4 meters of height.

Sonic Arrow- Sonic arrows contain a sonar tracking device; any enemy that will be detected is visibly marked for Hanzo to hunt down.

Storm Arrows- With this ability, Hanzo can fire several arrows instantly, but with reduced damage.

Lunge- This ability allows Hanzo to make a double jump to navigate terrains more easily.

Dragonstrike- This is Hanzo’s ultimate ability. Upon activation, a Dragon Spirit is launched, dealing damage to any enemies it passes through. While the ability is active, Hanzo will passively generate 1% of Ult Charge every few seconds.

  • MCCREE

Classification: Damage
Health Pool: 225 (Health: 225 | Armor: 0)

Mcree’s ability to take out enemies no matter the range is what ranks him so high on this list. Whether you empty your clip from a close range on a tank or hit a headshot from across the map, Mcree will deal the damage necessary to bring you closer to the taste of victory. If you learn how to use his ultimate properly you should have some “team wipeout-Youtube video material” in no time. Just hit the practice range!

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Peacekeeper -Peacekeeper is Cassidy’s main weapon. The primary fire shoots a single, but deadly accurate bullet to a target enemy. While the second fire allows Cassidy to shot the remaining cartridges at blinding speed.

ABILITIES
Combat Roll- Allows Cassidy to roll a short distance in the direction he’s currently moving.

This also reloads his main weapon, Peacekeeper, while he’s rolling.

Flashbang -This ability causes Cassidy to hurl a small grenaded in a forward arc. The explosion causes small damage and stun effects to nearby enemies.

Deadeye- This is Cassidy’s ultimate ability.

Once activated, Cassidy’s movement will be slow but he will enter a special targeting mode where enemies are marked as long as they are in his vision. Cassidy can then fire a bullet at all the marked targets.

Cassidy will not be able to use any other ability while this is active.

  • BAPTISTE

Classification: Support
Health Pool: 200 (Health: 200 | Armor: 0)

A few patches ago, Baptiste was in dire need of nerfs. Well, they did a pretty good job at it. Thanks to his nerfs, amazing immortality field, and healing, Baptiste is now an incredible pick for most, if not all, players. To make things even better, his damage potential recently got buffed as well as his ultimate. Baptiste’s double damage alone can explain why he belongs to this tier.

Weapons and Abilities:

WEAPONS
Biotic Launcher- Baptiste primary weapon. The primary fire fires three-round bullets with significant damage output.

Its secondary fire can launch projectiles that heal allies near the impact.

ABILITIES
Exo Boots- With this passive ability, Baptiste can crouch and then jump higher.

Regenerative Burst- When activated, Baptise can heal himself and his nearby allies for several seconds.

Immortality Field- This ability allows Baptiste to use a device to create a barrier field that prevents allies from going below 10% HP.

When inside the dome, heroes with less than 10% HP will instantly be healed to 10% HP.

Amplification Matrix- This is Baptiste’s ultimate ability. The matrix doubles the damage and/or healing effects of projectiles launched by allies. This can be destroyed by enemies using an EMP.

A-Tier

Following our religion creating heroes, we have the Good ol’ reliable Tier. They might not have the trust or the “one size fits all” of the previous category but Damn they are strong. Depending on the team composition and the type of fighting you are going for, the heroes on this list could be more suitable than some of the higher-ranked ones.

  • Roadhog
Roadhog is a unique case since his hook combo makes him a serious threat for the squishy heroes but also his self-heal makes him quite independent from his healers, giving them the time to deal damage and focus on keeping alive the weaker characters.
  • Mercy
One of the heroes that have been here from the beginning of Overwatch, Mercy has always been an excellent choice when it comes to healing. She can provide all the healing buffs a team needs or a sizable damage boost. Being able to bring back a hero that just died will always be extremely useful. The reason she is not in a higher tier is that, in this meta, she doesn’t have a big shield tank to protect her, making her quite vulnerable to the enemy’s snipers. Also, her DPS is on the lower side.
  • Zarya
Zarya has seen many fluctuations in her preference by the players. From being almost invisible to being a necessary pick. Finally she seems to have found some balance in this patch. A very meta hero that, thanks to her godly ultimate, when it comes to crowd control and combo potential no one can match.
  • Reinhardt
  • We can not describe how happy we are about the recent buffs for our favorite tank, Reinhardt. Once the pinnacle of every strategy, Reinhardt had fallen out of favor from high-ranking Overwatch players due to the nerfs he received a few patches ago. Thankfully the game seems to be shifting back to Reinhardt’s favor, especially with his higher HP and DPS after the recent patch. Currently, he is very in meta, combined with Zarya.
  • Reaper
When the meta was all about big beefy tanks, Reaper was in it. He can tear through HP like a knife through butter. But with the shift of the meta, his damage potential has been reduced since he has to hit the smaller heroes. With all the great DPS heroes that exist, it’s hard to make Reaper a priority. Still, if you have a Reinhardt or an Orisa that needs killing, you know what to pick. Additionally, his life-steal passive is a welcome skill you can count on.
  • Lucio
Lucio can be the difference maker between Victory or Defeat. His toolkit is great for helping your team and being annoying to the enemy’s team. If you coordinate everyone with his ultimate ability, you can break through any kind of defense. Although, the communication and coordination required to execute a push make him a situational pick. Only if your enemy is playing some bunker-style defense.
  • Sigma
Sigma fell a little bit from his meta-defining days. Of course, he is still a beast that can protect his team from multiple angles, but the nerfs he got were enough to make him a more balanced hero. Now that he cannot spam his shield so fast, you need a lot more discipline and communication while you are playing him.
  • Echo
Echo’s high mobility, combined with her high damage can be utilized in many ways to surprise-burst your enemies from angles that they would never expect. Her small character model makes her hard to hit, especially when she is flying frantically in the air. One thing that is tricky about Echo, however, is her ultimate ability. You need to have a game plan already laid down before even picking Echo. Meaning, you need to know which hero you want to copy. So, be wary of your team composition if you pick Echo.
  • Tracer
Tracer may be an extremely hard hero to master, but it couldn’t be denied that she can be an unstoppable killing machine if you learn how to utilize her strengths. Sometimes, playing against a good Tracer feels like the enemy has an extra hero on their side. The DPS she offers, combined with her mobility (and let’s admit it, the voice acting as well), makes Tracer our top pick for the best hero in Overwatch. Poke and run, boys.
  • Ana
As one of the heroes with the highest average pick rate (even in higher ranks) and a very stable win rate percentage, it only makes sense to have Ana in this tier. It is obvious that she can offer disable and healing in a quantity that many other heroes lack.

B-Tier

Overwatch Tier List

The heroes on this list are still viable. A bit more situational than the heroes on the good ol’ reliable tier, but they are still heroes you can choose to help you when you are in a tight spot.

  • Junkrat
Although Junkrat has always been a borderline meme hero, his high damage potential makes him a pretty favorite choice among the players — especially when there is a choke-point on the map (ex. Temple Of Anubis, King’s Row). The damage he can produce in a small area is a real threat to the enemy.
  • Genji
Everybody loves Genji. He is very fun to play and the feeling you get climbing walls and slashing through people is unique to this character. It makes you want to learn how to play him. Unfortunately, the practice it requires to learn how to play Genji and the risk-reward he offers is not suitable for the current state of the game. At least he got a buff to his fire rate, which gives him a much-needed DPS boost. If you are a good Genji player, in Gold, Silver, or Bronze… slash away.
  • Ashe
A versatile mid-range hit scanning hero, that’s what Ashe is. Her rifle does some serious damage (provided you land the shots) making her ideal to take down the pesky Echo, Tracer, Mcree player. “Bob” is a force to be reckoned with, and easy to use, since you just press the button and it does the job. She is a very good option for beginners but also more experienced players.
  • Widowmaker
The reason Widowmaker is this low on the list is the HP nerf she got from the developers and the shift of the meta toward a more dynamic way of playing. Although, if you want to continue dealing damage from a distance, she remains to be a good pick, but make sure you can stay alive.
  • Orisa
Orisa’s shield was very strong during the Shields meta, but now her low mobility and dependence on coordination to function make her a horrible choice for attacking. If you want to hold down a position, somewhere with choke points, Orisa can still do an excellent job. She received some small buffs to her fortify ability making her a bit more survivable.
C-Tier

Overwatch Tier List

(I hope you know the meme)

In lower SR you will probably not get punished for picking the following heroes and you can still play your game, although if you are looking to survive in the higher rankings you better start practicing some of the heroes on higher Tiers.

  • Bridgitte
Inspired by the Crusader class from Diablo 3, Bridgitte remains a strong character with tank characteristics, along with her flail. Brigitte hasn’t found much stability lately; at the moment, she is a DPS. Yes, that’s right, DPS, and not Support. Although her high close-range damage combined with her barrier makes her a great pick when you are dealing with poking heroes, you wouldn’t find a lot of use of her on offensive compositions. At least, Tracer will have a very difficult time poking when you are standing with your team. So, stick close to your supports and keep pushing the track!
  • Doomfist
Let’s talk about Doomfist. Don’t get us wrong, we love Doomfist’s playstyle. The ability to one-punch (man) support is still strong and his mobility is exceptional. That said, his big character model and his overreliance on his cooldowns to do damage are making him a very situational pick, with pro teams avoiding him completely.
  • Soldier 76
No hero is more straightforward than Soldier 76. He has all the abilities you would expect from a soldier but with a built-in auto-aim ultimate. He can easily fit your role as a DPS playing Soldier 76. Just find a good flanking spot and destroy your enemies. His only disadvantage is his mobility, sure he can run fast but he doesn’t have the flying ability of an Echo or any of the skills of Tracer.
  • Bastion
Without a doubt, Bastion’s best quality is his damage output. Unfortunately, not getting killed while firing those shots is a completely different story. That said, Bastion requires an awful lot of skill to master—although, his flaws in other areas can make one question if investing time for him is worth it.
RELATED:  Catfish Stardew Valley: Ultimate Guide
F-Tier

On this Tier we have the heroes that you should avoid 99.9% of the cases. Just trust us on that.

  • Pharah
Pharah, in this meta, is like a fly. Always around being annoying, grabbing your attention, but in the end, there is nothing dangerous about her (some personal feelings included). The problem is, to make Pharah viable, you need a Mercy to support her and if there is a Mercy supporting her, that’s a Mercy that is not helping the rest of her team, but if the hit scanning of the enemy isn’t on point, she becomes a viable option.
  • Torbjorn
Torbjörn’s turret might seem similar to Ashe’s ultimate ability, Bob, but these heroes differ a lot. While Ashe has some high-damage potential, Torbjörn relies on his turret doing all the job. A turret that is very static and the players have learned how to prioritize destroying it pretty fast. His ultimate is still strong when used correctly but not enough to rank him higher on this list.
  • Symmetra
Symmetra’s abilities have always put her on the least favorable picks. Her teleporter is nice, yes, but all the hiding spots for it have already been found (at least in higher rankings). The enemy will find them and destroy them fast. Although in some cases, like the last desperate hold, she is quite useful. A hero returning to battle faster than expected can make the difference.
  • Mei
Mei’s Ice Wall and sniping used to make her a guaranteed pick for both teams. After all,  she can separate her enemies in half if she places an ice wall on the right spot, giving you a significant advantage. However, since Overwatch grew older, the people have learned to deal with these cheeky strats, making her a less viable option to the point where she is hardly picked anymore.
  • Sombra
Certain heroes sound great but, in practice, they don’t fit with most strategies. In Overwatch, this hero is Sombra. Her invisibility and translocator give her some flanking potential, but the damage output she has is disappointing. Sombra needs some reworking to make her a viable competitive character.

OVERWATCH TIER LIST: HOW WE RANK CHARACTERS

When considering this Overwatch Tier List, there are different ways to rank the heroes and we are trying to make a mix of what is working in the highest level of play (competitive, grandmaster, master, etc.), but also what is realistic considering the skill cap that some characters have.

A good example is Tracer. If you look at the statistics on the lowest rankings, Tracer has a pick rate of 1.29% and a win rate of 45.69% (at the time of writing this article), but as you go into higher rankings the pick rate and win rate increase drastically. It’s clear that although Tracer is an undoubtedly strong hero, the skill required to play her is making her less viable for the lower ranks.

THE META

As you are aware, in gaming there is this thing called Meta, which basically is the most preferred and optimized way the game is being played at a specific moment. We will start by defining the meta that we are into.

(Red letters means important and scary, like DEPTS or EXISTING)

From what we saw in the Overwatch League, most teams were choosing to go with 2 Snipers. Their high damage and relative survivability thanks to their distance from the fight have made them excellent choices for both defense and attack. Recently, Blizzard and the Overwatch team have tried to create some more versatility in the game. Since the Tanks slowly changed from the mainstream big beefy hammer-wielding Germans to more rodent-like and pig-like ones (after nerfs to healing and shield values), the role of the supports has changed as well. In this meta, supports have to take a more active role in doing damage to the enemy as well as pay even more attention to their positioning, now that they don’t have a big shield to stay behind. A lot of weight on the shoulders of supports, right? Business as usual, I say.

The current meta focuses on Combo and Survivability. The team that can coordinate their ultimate’s correctly without dying to the opponent’s ultimates will have a better chance of winning. A positional advantage is more important than ever and map awareness is key.
