Introduction

Our friend Tony over at Raijintek sent us three of their newest CPU coolers. Raijintek is a newly established company this year and they aim to provide IT and lifestyle products starting with these CPU coolers they gave us which are named the Adios, Ereboss and the Themis. We love the fact that more and more players are checking in to compete with existing brands and makers of IT products. Raijintek offers these coolers at a very interesting price point which should make the other brands think twice about pricing their coolers high. We aren’t going to be reviewing all three at the same time, thus we would be starting with the biggest model of the group, the Raijintek Ereboss CPU cooler. Let us see how this cooler performs against some of the reigning coolers today.

The Raijintek Ereboss is a small cooler compared to the likes DeepCool Assassin, Noctua NH-D14 and other similar coolers that use 140mm fans. Raijintek took the typical tower design and added large platform aluminum fins to increase the overall cooling performance. It is paired with a thin 140mm PWM fan which can spin as low as 650 RPM to keep things quiet. You might be wondering if a single fan is enough to equal a top performing cooler. We will find out shortly.

Raijintek’s take on the Ereboss

A giant heat-sink with world’s top slim type 14013 fan, is an extremely good C/P value cooler. “Designed in Germany”, Ereboss is manufactured to provide users an awesome performance but at a great price point. Its’ fan mate is 14013, world’s top slim type 140mm fan-13mm thickness, but provide outstanding cooling air flow. Closer Look

The Raijintek Ereboss is a fairly large cooler weighing in at 808 grams without the fan included but we have handled heavier coolers than the Ereboss so this is pretty much a non-issue. The weight is achieved by the larger than normal aluminum fins and six heat pipes. Raijintek has a simple but effective mounting system that makes the Ereboss’s weight a non-issue. And at 6.3″ tall, we don’t see many issues in mounting it in any mid or larger tower.

Overall, the Raijintek Ereboss is built like any other standard tower designed cooler. There are a series of aluminum fins stacked top one another. But in the case to the Ereboss, the design does look a different due to the size of the fins used. The surface area of the fins is about twice the size of the regular coolers. This should give the Ereboss a better cooling performance.

If you take a look at the top of the Ereboss, you will see a hexagon opening and a partial on the very edge of the fins. These openings are to allow the cooler to be secured to the motherboard even with the fans attached. This doesn’t seem like much of a feature but securing the fans to a mounted cooler can be a little tedious especially when trying to secure the bottom portion of the fans.

The heat pipes of the Ereboss has not been treated with the nickel plating process so you get the copper color mixed with silver from the rest of the cooler. Even without it, the cooler still looks great. There are a total of six heat pipes to help transfer the heat from the processor to be dissipated by the aluminum fins of the tower cooler.

The base of the Ereboss is made of copper but has been treated with nickel to give it a smooth and shiny surface.

Next, we have the fan of the Ereboss. Raijintek have a different approach with their fan selection. Instead of a standard 25mm thick fan, they elected to use a thinner 13mm blower. This doesn’t add too much weight to the cooler and it still gets the job done. The fan spins between 650 – 1400 RPM and is PWM controlled. The other nice thing about this fan is the noise level which only tops around 28 dBA.

 

Included is everything needed to mount the cooler to any Intel motherboard from socket 775 to any current model and for AMD sockets from AM2 forward is supported.

Mounting Images

The process of mounting Raijintek’s Ereboss CPU cooler to the motherboard is simple enough for anybody to be able to accomplish it. But there is something that we would recommend doing out of order compared to the instruction manual. That would be if you are installing this cooler on the motherboard with large heat sinks for the VRM, we suggest placing the fans in the cooler first before securing to the socket. Reason being is getting a good hand on the rubber fan braces to slide them in the holes provided on the underside of the cooler is mind numbing.

Testing Methodology

For our testing we will be using the following procedures and parameters to acquire the necessary data:

  • Thermal compound used is Arctic Silver 5
  • Idle temperatures are recorded after the system has been allowed to idle for thirty minutes from the point Windows has finished loading.
  • Load temperatures are recorded by running OCCT for twenty minutes on all available threads.
  • Real Temp is used for the recording of all temperature sensor reading.
  • PWM function is disabled via BIOS to allow the fans to run at full speed.
  • CPU model and overclock speed used for testing are outlined below in “Test Hardware”.
  • Each cooler is first tested with one fan supplied from the manufacturer.
  • Each cooler is then tested again with a second fan attached if provided by the manufacturer.

Results

 

Conclusion

Normally, I end the conclusion with the current going price of the item I am testing. But for this one, I want to state the price now so you will have that in the back of your mind as I continue this. The US pricing for the Ereboss will be around $45 which is way cheaper than the other big coolers in the market.

The Raijintek Ereboss performed extremely well in our testing. It clearly beat that of the Noctua NH-U12S cooler than we had on the bench just prior to it and we have to admit that we were a big fan of the Noctua cooler. But when you can get a bigger and better performing cooler for less why not give it a chance? The Ereboss was able to achieve its performance feats with the aid of a thinner, lighter and slower spinning fan. The included fan is only 13mm thick and spins at 1400 RPM max.

Besides performance, we have to mention the installation of the cooler. It is nice to see a cooler with great performance released without an overly complex mounting system. Granted we tested the cooler using a X79 motherboard which is the easiest to mount a cooler to, we did play around with it on a couple of Z87 motherboards which required the addition of back plates and things still remained simple enough for anyone to mount it.

We are sure there will be coolers in our lab that will outperform the Ereboss. However, they would unlikely beat the price/performance ratio of the Ereboss. As of now, we cannot find another cooler that matches it. This cooler along with the Highly Recommended award deserves the Best Buy award as well.
