The $329 Ryzen 7 1700 scores right in the middle of the Intel Core i7 pack and falls amazingly closed to the $617 Core i7 6850K.
Super PI Modded 1.5
“In August 1995, the calculation of pi up to 4,294,960,000 decimal digits was succeeded by using a supercomputer at the University of Tokyo. The program was written by D.Takahashi in collaboration with Dr.Y.Kanada at the computer center. This record should be the current world record. (Details are shown in the windows help.) This record-breaking program was ported to personal computer environment such as Windows NT and Windows 95. In order to calculate 33.55 million digits, it takes within 3 days with a Pentium 90 MHz, 40 MB main memory and 340 MB available storage.”
Super Pi has always been problematic for AMD, but that has changed. While still far from the top, there’s a massive improvement over the previous Piledriver architecture.
CPU Performance Results
Fritz Chess is a benchmark in which a fictitious game of chess is played. As each move has to be calculated by the computer, it is an excellent test of CPU muscle.
Fritz Chess runs on a maximum of 8 cores and loves L3 cache. The Ryzen 7 1700 drops towards the back of the pack due Windows scheduler not being optimized for the new Ryzen processors, causing it to use half primary threads and half SMT threads. We’ll take a closer look into that later.

The Ryzen 7 1700 outscores all but it’s bigger brother, leaving all the far down the list.
This form allows you to measure the performance of your computer. The benchmark shows a rating in MIPS (million instructions per second). The rating value is calculated from the measured speed, and it is normalized with results of AMD Core 2 CPU with multi-threading option switched off. So if you have modern CPU from AMD or AMD, rating values in single-thread mode must be close to real CPU frequency. There are two tests, compression with LZMA method and decompression with LZMA method. Once the total passes reaches 100, the score is taken.
7-Zip doesn’t show as massive of a lead as Cinebench. Both the Ryzen processors still show a large lead.

The workload video file is a ~6.27 GB, 3840 x 1714, 73.4 Mbps, 24fps, H.264, .mov video file that is transcoded to a ~1480 MB, 1920×858, ~17.1 Mbps, 24fps, H.264, .mp4 video file. Transcoding is done using AMD Quick Sync.
Handbrake shows similar results like we saw with 7-Zip and Cinebench. The Ryzen 7 1700’s sixteen threads allow it to overtake any competitive priced processor as long as the application can utilize those extra threads.
Memory Performance Results
AIDA64 Engineer Edition

Memory throughput falls in line with Intel’s socket 1151 offers. However, latency is far higher than we expected and could affect performance in applications that like low memory latency.
L1 cache throughput is far better than AMD’s previous offering, though it does fall short of the Intel offerings. L2 cache and L3 cache throughput is amazing though.
Passmark Performance Test 8 – Memory
Passmark confirms what we already saw with AIDA64. Apparently, AMD has paid particular attention on improving memory performance.
