Introduction

The introduction of the 790GX bought to the world many new improvements for the AMD AM2 socket processors. The first major improvement we saw was the increase of bandwidth carries by the system bus. Giving us a full 20.8GB/s of bandwidth allowed us to see what the AM2+ Phenom were all about.

In order to give us the extra boost we wanted to see in our gaming as well as graphics works we were graced with Hybrid Crossfire the unique at the time of initial release we were able to boost performance of our add-on graphics card by being able to see link onboard graphics with that of an add-on GPU. This eliminated us from having to purchase another when we would have something like a HD4650 and want to edge out just a bit more performance.

These two features were just a couple of new technologies we saw coming out of ATI’s labs. With many more being implemented. Many great companies have taken the 790GX integrated the chipset with mATX PCB and produced a few good motherboards. Companies like ASUS and Gigabyte have produced many motherboards off of this North Bridge. Today we will be talking about a new company to us at Pro-Clockers.

Closer look

Overall the layout of the HZ01 is not too bad looking. The first thing that you are granted by is the bronze color PCB. I like the fact the board has the up skill look of an ASUS motherboard and not the looks of a low-cost budget that you may get in a combo at your local electronic store. Jetway did not go crazy on the colors of the slots and plugs but then again if you look at the board at a quick glance it looks as there are very few slots on the board. But that is not the case.

The area around the CPU socket is engulf mostly by mosfets, chokes and caps of various sizes. Jetway choose to use OC-Con high polymer capacitors. The caps are pressure tested at extreme temps to assure for longevity. The size of the heat sinks that surround the socket were kept to a height that would not interfere with the mounting of taller and larger CPU coolers. We mounted our Xigmatek Dark Knight with no problem. This isn’t printed on Jetway’s site, but the motherboard supports AM2+ and AM3 processors.

As you can see from the image below the ATX connector is located at the top of the board. This is not uncommon to have it placed here but on most boards it is located on the right edge due to the length of the DIMM slots. Well we see the HZ01 does not use standard DIMM slots but smaller SO-DIMM slots which laptops would normally use. For ram you are limited to DDR2 at speeds of 533, 667 and 800.

For storage purposes the HZ01 has six SATA 3.0 ports as well as a single IDE controller. For performance and data protection RAID in the form of 0, 1, and 10. The lone floppy controller is located under the last PCI slot. All of the storage controllers are managed via the SB750.

Speaking of PCI slots the HZ01 has a total of four: one standard PCI, one 1x and dual 16x. With the dual larger slots Crossfire is supporting in its truest form. With the amount of space between the larger PCIe slots you can easily mount dual X2 cards on this motherboard without issues for some Crossfire fun.

For cooling Jetway did not do too bad. The North Bridge as well as the SB750 chip and some mosfets on the side of the CPU socket are passively cooler with aluminum heat sinks.The The North Bridge is very unique and added a different touch to the board.

Something that I have never seen on a mATX motherboard before and present on this board is buttons for clearing CMOS, reset and power. This definitely made it easier to test and bench the board.

Lastly, we have the I/O part of the HZ01. All the major players are located on the back of the board. Included are DVI, VGA and 1080P HDMI. And for a better listening of your favorite music or better sounding sound effects from your movies support for 7.1 channel speakers is included.

 

BIOS

For some reason I thought that the HZ01 was going to be one of those motherboards that did not offer much in form of the BIOS. Boy was I wrong. Granted it is not an equal to say DFI or everything but it is more than decent. You have total control of the memory timings, various voltage options as well as overclocking of the integrated graphics.

 

Testing

Unlike the past few Asrock motherboards we have tested the HZ01 read our processor as advertised. A prefect 2800MHz at 200MHz frequency.

In August 1995, the calculation of pi up to 4,294,960,000 decimal digits was succeeded by using a supercomputer at the University of Tokyo. Overclocking

I have never overclocked a motherboard that was based on laptop memory before. So, I guess there is a first for everything. I have my trusted 720 BE processor from AMD to tell the levels of this motherboard. We played with two different ways of overclocking the HZ01 which was via the BIOS and AMD’s overclocking utility that comes with the board. Our best results can in the form of the utility. With the voltage of the CPU at 1.5v and the ram sitting at 1.9v we managed a pretty good 3.7GHz. That is nearly 1000MHz above the stock 2.8GHZ of the CPU. And because I did not know the limitations of the laptop memory that we were using I did not want to push the voltage too much. So we felt that 1.9v was a safe way to go.

Conclusion

When it comes down to it the Jetway is a pretty good example that some good things come from companies that we may have never purchased anything from before. For a mATX motherboard the HZ01 offered some things that we have never seen on a motherboard of this size which was the buttons to power, reset and clear the CMOS. Come to think of it a lot of motherboard of standard size and more expensive do not offer this. I don’t think I still haven’t gotten over this one feature. Another feature of the board that was way different from anything we have seen more is mini DIMM slots. I have no reason for this but it does save room on the board.

We were praying that the HZ01 supported AM3 processor as it is the only AMD processor we have in the lab. For some reason the web site does not state. We were in luck as it did boot right up with our 720 BE. The correct perimeters was detected and no BIOS flash was needed. To add to this we found that the board was able to overclock the processor to a very respectable 3.7GHz. This was done with very little voltage added to the memory.

The HZ01 offers some of the best graphics we have seen with an on-board GPU motherboard. The HD3300 is fully capable of playing back some major high-definition video. Just like some of the Asrock motherboards we have tested lately, the HZ01 has DVI, HDMI and VGA for connectivity.

The HZ01 is not without its faults. The one fault that I can see many people having is the lack of memory laps slots. We are used to having four slots which would support at least 16 gigs of memory. With the slots on this board you are limit to the amount of ram you can install. We were only about to acquire a four gig kit of ram to test with. Chances are the eight gig kits are supported as well. If you decide to use this motherboard for a HTPC build chances are four gigs of ram is enough.

As you can tell we like the HZ01 a great deal and would like to highly recommend it to others.
