MSI GTX1070Ti Gaming 8GB Twin Frozer VI Review
Amidst a rumor mill storm of epic proportions, Nvidia announced the GTX 1070Ti making the new card official. Our sample is a gorgeous MSI GTX 1070Ti Gaming Twin Frozer VI in typical MSI Red and Black. Pushing an amazing 2432 Cuda Cores on the 1070Ti compared to the 1080 which pushes 2560 Cuda Cores the 1070Ti gives up a mere 128 Cuda Cores. Now the GTX 1070 boasted 1920 Cuda Cores so the MSI 1070Ti Gaming w/Twin Frozer VI gains 512 Cuda cores over its little brother the GTX 1070. The slight snip and clip done on the GTX 1080 to make it a 1070Ti is so small that the GTX 1070Ti is more akin to the GTX 1080 than the GTX 1070 which should shut down some of the rumor mill trolls quite efficiently.
Facing 2432 Cuda Cores with 8GB of GDDR5 running across a 256-Bit bus the MSI GTX 1070Ti Gaming Twin Frozer VI gives up the more expensive GDDR5X on the GTX 1080 and the GDDR5 runs at 8GHz effective while the GDDR5X of the GTX 1080 runs at 10GHz but in testing the GDDR5X hasn’t really given the bigger cards that much advantage. Comparing memory bandwidth on the MSI GTX 1070Ti Gaming Twin Frozer VI we see 256.3GB/s while the mighty GTX 1080 pushes 320.3GB/s. The GPU on the MSI GTX 1070Ti Gaming Twin Frozer VI is a GP104 variant named GP104-300-A1 and is still the Pascal series with a 16nm FinFet process and residing on a die that is 314mm2.
As expected the GTX 1070Ti move from Nvidia puts them in a market position to fall between Vega 56 and Vega 64 and compete both from a financial and graphic power position. The GTX 1070Ti should fill the Pascal SKU slots and we suspect that the GTX 1070Ti will be the last Pascal SKU to drop before Volta appears. It looks like the video card world just got more interesting and the MSI GTX 1070Ti Gaming Twin Frozer VI will be at the forefront of the GPU wars.
It’s easy to talk specifications and numbers but when it comes down to it there’s nothing like a good graphic to help clarify things. These are reference specifications we will get into the MSI GTX1070Ti Gaming Twin Frozer VI specific specification a little later. Cuda Cores go from the GTX 1070 at 1920 to the GTX 1070 at 2432 (quite a jump) to the mighty GTX 1080 with 2560. With the slight difference in Cuda cores between the GTX 1070Ti and GTX 1080Ti, we expect the GTX 1070Ti to give the GTX 1080 something to look at in the rearview mirror, like that tailgating semi roaring up on your bumper rear view mirror view. Sticking to major differences the GTX 1070 has a total of 120 Texture Units while the GTX 1070Ti has 160 only 2 less than the GTX 1080. That leave one major difference left and that’s between the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070Ti and that’s the GTX 1080 gets GDDR5X and the GTX 1070Ti gets less expensive GDDR5 which runs at 8GHz or 2GHz less than GDDR5X. In testing the GDDR5X just wasn’t making that large of a difference so we suspect a close race between the 1070TI and 1080.
