OCZ Vertex 460 240GB SSD Review

Founded in 2002, San Jose, California-based OCZ Technology  got their start in the RAM memory market. In 2007, they decided to expand their product line and acquired PC Power & Cooling, whose products included power supplies. When the solid state drive technology started to emerge, OCZ was there too. In September 2010 OCZ announced the RevoDrive, which was one of the first  bootable PCI-E drives for the enthusiast market. In 2011 OCZ acquired Indilinx Company and PLX Technology’s Abingdon R&D department. This allowed them to design many of the SSD components in-house. OCZ developed a reputation for outstanding SSD performance and looked to be unstoppable.

However, by 2013, the outlook for OCZ looked quite different. Competition from companies like Samsung eroded OCZ’s market share and profits suffered because of it. As 2013 starting coming to a close, it looked like OCZ would have to cease operations. At the same time, Toshiba was looking to enter the SSD market in a big way and it decided to purchase OCZ. Toshiba, which already manufactured NAND Flash that is used in SSD’s, would now be able to manufacture almost every component needed for SSD production themselves.

Today we are taking a look at the OCZ Vertex 460 240GB SSD. This is OCZ’s first product after the Toshiba acquisition. It uses the company’s own Indilinx Barefoot 3 M10 controller, a slightly under-clocked version of the Barefoot 3 M00 controller used in OCZ’s flagship Vector 150 SSD. The Vertex 460 uses the same Toshiba 19nm Multi-Level Cell (MLC) Flash as the Vector 150 SSD. It also features a sizable 512MB DDR3 SDRAM buffer like the the Vector 150, but operating at 1333MHz, instead of 1600 MHz. It appears that Toshiba is looking to enter the SSD market with a bang.
