Seagate SkyHawk Surveillance 10TB SATA 6.0Gbps Hard Drive Review

Final Thoughts & Conclusion

Seagate once again proves why it has been a leader in storage solutions for nearly 40 years and shows no signs of slowing down. While Seagate has done application specific drives for a long time, the new Guardian families make it incredibly simple to get the best solution for your own needs with very little effort. Seagate’s SkyHawk family provides the very foundation of keeping tabs on everything going on around you, and provides up to a staggering 14TB per drive currently and seems to be on track to keep expanding the capacity per drive.

While we didn’t have dozens of networked cameras on hand and weeks to spend recording them, we were able to beat up on the Skyhawk with nearly 24 hours of straight writing and the SkyHawk didn’t even bat an eye. In fact, performance was steady and predictable through every test. If you read our long-winded intro, you’d have caught that drives suited to this environment specifically need to be predictable and not waste too much time trying to fix data that does arrive at the system slightly less than perfect so you don’t miss a single frame from any camera, ever. If 10TB isn’t quite enough for your storage needs, or you have too many high image quality cameras running, the SkyHawk family comes in a Pro version which can handle a heavier annual workload, and you can run these drives in RAID for higher capacity, fault tolerance against individual drive failure, and higher performance.

If you are in the market for storage for your NVR, look no further.

Great job Seagate!
