Another one of those quality products is the subject of our next review. The ZM1000-HP is one powerful power supply and it is also good looking. This six 12-volt rail 1000 watt behemoth is a sterling dark gray glossy finish that is pretty attractive without being flashy.  And while I am on the exterior features of the ZM1000-HP is mostly modular for unlimited cable management possibilities.This power supply has all that one would need in a unit to power the best of gaming rigs.

 

 

 

Introduction

Zalman is quite famous for a lot of things like cooling and cases. At one time or another chances are you have used one or two their products. Even before the birth of this website I was quite fond of their fan-less GPU cooling products. I thought they were the coolest things in the case. And the orb-like coolers were in many of my builds as well. The quality of their products can’t be denied.

Another one of those quality products is the subject of our next review. The ZM1000-HP is one powerful power supply and it is also good looking. This six 12-volt rail 1000 watt behemoth is a sterling dark gray glossy finish that is pretty attractive without being flashy.  And while I am on the exterior features of the ZM1000-HP is mostly modular for unlimited cable management possibilities.This power supply has all that one would need in a unit to power the best of gaming rigs.

 

Packaging and contents

Another big power supply another big box. Being Zalman’s biggest power supply means this will be Zalman’s biggest box. With the plastic handle it looks like a small toolbox. The front states some of the broad features and the rear give a bit more detailed.

Inside the box of course consist of the power supply but also modular cables, a power cord, screws and a installation guide.

Closer look

Like any other 1000 watt plus power supply the ZM1000 is on the larger side measuring just over 8 inches long. So obviously this is not the unit for you if you are intending on building a SFF computer. This unit also has a really shiny coat that will make it fingerprint prone but really how often will you have to touch it.

Overall this unit is built for the extreme gamer and overclocker. It is completely Nvidia SLI certified and ATI Crossfire compatible. No matter what your flavor is in video cards the ZM1000 has you covered.

The size and the certifications maybe one thing but chances are the most impressive numbers about the ZM1000 is 1000 and 6. 1000 is the amount of wattage of the unit and 6 is the number of 12 volt rails. 1000 watts is not for the faint at heart or someone that is low in the wallet. A lot of us will not need this amount of power in the near future but it is nice to have it on hand when that time comes.

And with the amount of rails on the ZM1000 it seems as if really single component in the PC will have its own link to the 12v source. So the CPU, hard drives and video cards will be separate.

On the cooling end of the power unit is a massive 140mm fan. The fan blows over all the caps, resistors and heat sinks that make up the unit. Zalman only states that the fan is slow spinning, no really numbers on noise level, rotation or CFM.

The rear of the unit stands out only because there is no power button on the unit. For some people this maybe a good thing but sometimes when going thru the overclocking process and after a failure it is easier to just hit the power switch on the power supply.

The featured side of the unit houses all the connections for the modular extensions. Each connection is simply label for no confusion. Also there is a switch that’s labeled ‘Standby Noise Suppressor’ which is used to eliminate high frequency noise in standby mode.

The modular cabling is completely sleeved to the ends. With the era of computer building going thru a neat stage, these cables make for easy and neat cable management.

Testing

We know that testing a power supply on a loaded system is not the best way to test a power supply but you can not overlook real world testing. Other sites have methods that use thousands of dollars in equipment to provide them greater detail. These sites and the method they use should be a true means on how well a power supply is. We feel that showing you how it performs under real world conditions is a valid measure of its performance.

Noise

I would have never thought I would see the day when I would see a 1k power supply that was capable of being placed in a silent environment. At idle as well as at load the ZM1000 is absolutely one of the quietest 1k unit we have ever tested.

 

Conclusion

We have found that the Zalman ZM1000-HP is one powerful power supply and quiet too.  And will fit the needs of anyone that want a high end high powered unit rather it is in a home theater setup or a high powered gaming rig. I don’t know how Zalman manage to keep such a massive amount of power quiet but other manufacturers need to adapt the same concepts.

You will come out of the pocket for this 1000 watt, six 12v rail behemoth. At $250 you can have yourself a ZM1000 power from Zalman. If you were to think about it for a second you will see this isn’t a crazy price as 1k units know PC Power and Cooling and Thermaltake will cost you more. But if this model is still out of your price range then there is the ZM850 for a very buck less.

If you are one that is in the market for a shiny big power supply with half modular and half permanent cabling this is another pro for the ZM1000. It is known you have to use some cabling like power, HDD and PCI-e connection. And they are attached to the unit but if you need more than what is available then just add what you need.

We definately recommend the Zalman ZM1000 because it can fit any rig’s needs. Just a matter of if you are willing to pay for it.
