Testing & Software
To test out the Smooth-Q2, I decided to bring it along on one of my afternoon hikes on some trails by my workplace. Thanks to the compact size of the gimbal I was able to leave my backpack behind and store the Smooth-Q2 in my pocket.
Once I got to the trails, I attached my phone to the Smooth-Q2 and followed the balancing instructions in the manual. It only took about 2 minutes to get the phone balanced correctly, which was quite impressive and got me shooting video in no time at all. Even if you don’t have your phone 100% balanced, the Smooth-Q2’s strong motors still have no problem adjusting, it just may shorten your battery life a little.
Even though the Smooth-Q2 is compatible with the ZyPlay application, it’s not required to operate the photo/record button. Once the Smooth-Q2 is powered on, just connect it to your phone via Bluetooth and you’re ready to shoot.
During my hike, I was extremely impressed with how well the Smooth-Q2 performed. It kept all my videos extremely steady and was a huge improvement over handheld video. I really liked how accessible the controls were and that gave me the ability to switch modes during my hike with little effort. My personal favorite mode was the “Follow” mode, which allows me to tilt the phone toward the sky and capture some nice shots of the fall leaves.
Overall, I was extremely impressed with the Smooth-Q2. Not only is it great for hikes due to its size, but I could also see myself bringing this to family events and taking amazing video. As seen in the video below, the Smooth-Q2 does an amazing job stabilizing, making the shaky phone videos a thing of the past.
If you are looking to get a few more features than the built-in Photo/Video application, Zhiyun has developed an application called “ZyPlay”. This application adds a lot of different options for your content creation such as:
To get started with the “ZyPlay” application, you can download for either iTunes / Google play depending on if you are using an iPhone or Android device. Once installed, open the application and navigate to the “For Smartphones” screen.
On the “For Smartphones” screen, click the menu icon in the upper-left of the screen to get a list of compatible smartphone gimbals. Scroll through the list to find the Smooth-Q2 and click it.
Once in the Smooth-Q2 screen and the gimbal is powered on, click the “Connect Now” button and the application will find all nearby devices.
You should now see the Smooth-Q2 on the list and just click it to connect it to your phone. Once connected, click the “Enter Now” button to start using “ZyPlay”
Once in the application, you can take photos, videos, do timelapses, and my favorite panoramas.
Here are a few of the shots I took using the Panorama mode:
After you are done shooting all your photos/videos, you can go to your library to view what you have taken. Also if you wish to save them to your phone, you can do that using the save icon at the bottom of the screen.
