Closer look

The NotePal X3 is designed to support any laptop up to and including 17”. It only comes in black which is quite traditional. It measure 16” x 12”. The thickness can range from 2” and 3” depending on how the user positions the rear height adjusters.

The NotePal X3 follows the traditional X design that other coolers in the same family have. The entire top of the cooler is made of mesh allowing all that comes in contact with it to get cool air from the internal fan.

The fan used in the X3 is a whooping 200mm in diameter. Like most fans of this size this one also spins rather slow which would be 500-850 RPM. The flow of air is between 65 and 76.5 CFM. And it stays quiet only producing 16-23 dBA of noise. It illuminates a nice blue glow when powered on it.

The X3 uses the fan for more than just cooling a laptop but the user themselves. At the bottom of the cooler is an outlet that allows some of the air produced by the fan to exit towards the user’s palm.

Along the side of the X3 are all the controls and plug-ins. The standard USB is like a pass-thru meaning the user will not lose out on a USB port when using the X3.The speed of the fan is controlled via a knob. And the LED and fan can be turned off and on at your convenience.

The bottom of the X3 is pretty busy but it is all functional and not just there for added bling. CM is known for paying attention to detail and it shows here as the USB cable has a place to be stowed when not in use.

The height of the cooler can be raised simply flipping the plastic feet at the rear of the cooler. No matter the level of the cooler it rest one four rubber non-slip pads.

User images

The Cooler Master NotePal X3 is a pretty decent cooler when used with the right laptop. What that means if used with a machine not categorized as a powerhouse the X3 will do its job without a hiccup. But when it comes to more powerful laptops, CM has other coolers that I would recommend like the SF-19. We saw a four degree temp drop with the cooler on our Sony F111FX, which runs a very heat producing first generation Intel Core i7.

Conclusion

The Cooler Master NotePal is one of the best looking cooler to come across our doorsteps. The big ‘X’ design still remains a part of the series. Using a large fan than the previous model, the 200mm unit in this cooler shows more promise than the smaller fans of the x3. The blue LED adds a little splash but only if the user wants to show it off.

The noise level of the NotePal X3 was not bad at all. Under most conditions we did not hear much from it. But once placed on a hard surface like wood, the unit did vibrate just a little.

If you are what I would call an average-Joe PC user on a laptop that has non-discrete graphics and lacks a workhorse of a processor, the X3 will do the job just fine. And that goes for any laptop from 12” to 17”.
