Introduction to the MUKii CharWise CS Mini Cooling Pad with Speakers

The reason many of us purchased netbooks is because of its small size. When I went to the store with my family to purchase one we knew it was small, but still had enough performance to still accomplish your basic everyday functions. The main reason we got it was for its compact size, lighter weight, but one can't leave out the extended battery life either. When it comes to all the accessories we buy for them they need to have the same convenience factor as well, for instance cooling pads and speakers. Yes, I did say speakers. Most of us are not entirely satisfied with the volume levels that the miniature netbook speakers produce. So that leaves you with headphones, which are not always practical since they can make it so you can hear anyone trying to talk to you, otherwise you are left with external speakers. But we can hear you asking "Who would want a full size speaker system for such a small computer?" Or for that matter who wants to carry speakers of any size around? We have a solution for that, and for the cooling pad as well.

Our friends at MUKii have sent over their CharWise CS Mini Cooling Pad, which also comes equipped with speakers for all of those not happy with their netbook's built-in solutions. So as it cools your system to a safe level, it can provide you with a better way to listen to your favorite tunes at the same time, and at a level that is suitable for others to enjoy if you want.

Closer look

The number one issue with netbooks and other smaller laptops, besides lack of performance, is their cooling ability. Even these extremely portable computers can get hot, and when placed on your lap can result in to some unpleasant warming to the... well, lap area. With so many cooling pad options on the market how do you decide? There aren’t too many advantages when it comes to different model.

The new MUKii CharWise does have something that many others do not: built-in speakers. The CharWise is designed to hold laptops measuring from 7" up to 12” in length. The unit comes in white. and is of your typical plastic construction. That means it weighs less than a couple of pounds, so it will be almost nothing to carry around if needed.

The top of the CharWise perforated with a bunch of tiny holes that serves two, although completely different, purposes. The top portion is for the ventilation of the dual 80mm cooling fans. The lower portion is the grills for the speaker drivers that sit underneath. MUKii did a great job with the looks of the CharWise as it does not clash with any of the netbooks I have personally seen.

In this photo we have the speakers upright to give you some idea of what the unit looking like expanded. Each half has a single 1.5” driver that is capable of 2W RMS, three watts max.

Moving around the CharWise we see the back side has a single mini-USB jack which is used to connect it to the computer. The right side has a 2 port USB 2.0 hub for any individual devices you may want to connect to your laptop. The opposite side has the volume control for the speaker system.

The bottom of the cooler has several rubber feet to help keep it from sliding around and protect the surface that you set the cooler onto. However, the pads are inset too far to really matter. Also, there is a warning label to keep you from damaging the speakers by turning them the incorrect way.

Testing

We hired the aid of my wife’s Lenovo S10 netbook for testing purposes. The adjusting of the speakers to prepare them for usage is very simple and should only take a couple of seconds. The netbook then rests on the little rails that appear after the speakers have been positioned. The air from the fan is forced underneath the netbook while in use.

The cooling was not exactly all that impressive as it only dropped the temperature at load about one, maybe two degrees. What was pleased us the most was the increase in volume the external speakers offered. Granted you will not be setting any decibel records but the it was loud enough to make a welcomed difference. Most of the sound  that came from the speakers where highs, with a hint of mids, and that was it. If you were looking for a lot of lows (bass) it simply is not happening.

Conclusion

The MUKii CharWise Mini Cooling Pad is handy to have around. Even if you have a netbook it does provide some cooling, not much, but some. We liked it more for its built-in speakers as it made the netbook's volume substantially higher than it was without it. Listening to audio is far more enjoyable than before as it was hard to hear anything. Granted you will not wake the neighbors with the CharWise but at least you can hear the music from across the room or understand the dialogue in videos now.
