Coolmax HD250 Series 2.5" Enclosure

Posted by on Saturday, July 4, 2009 - 3:47am

overviewOne company that we have not reviewed an enclosure from is Coolmax. We all know that Coolmax has an eye for making pretty good power supplies. But there knowledge of enclosures is just as big. That knowledge spreads over to their latest line of enclosures which is the 250 series. The series consist of three different models: B and L which both have eSATA and USB ports and there is a B model that just has a single USB port.  We will be concentrating on the eSATA models which are more future proof.

Introduction

There are numerous ways to move your data from one location to another. And there are just as many ways of backing up your data to protect it for years to come. One of the more popular ways to accomplish the two is to build your own portable drives. Most of the time we have an extra drive or two laying around to help us get started. That leaves us with only needing an enclosure to protect the drive. Over the last few years we have reviewed several enclosures from many different companies.

One company that we have not reviewed an enclosure from is Coolmax.

Packaging and contents

Coolmax choose two different ways to market the enclosures. When you walk to them in your favorite store you will see some of the units come in a soft plastic box like in the case of the HD-250L model. And then there are ones that come better packed like the HD-250C and the others we received.
Each came with two tiny screws and a small screw driver to assemble the units.

Closer look

Coolmax was super generous in sending over not one not two but four different 2.5” enclosures. The enclosures ranged from leather bound to metal ones. Coolmax goal here is to show that everyone is an individual and you can be a little different from the person shopping next to you.  If you were to do a search on their site you will see at least 13 different variations of this case series.

The two leather units are covered with really nice looking leather that is wrapped around an inner aluminum shell. The leather makes for a nice look but Coolmax knew that some form of heat dissipation has to take place and that is where the aluminum comes from. The 250L and 250CL are just slightly bigger than the hard drive one would use to build the enclosure around.

Each is stitched with strong thread to assure the leather is still attached to the unit. Coolmax makes it known that they make these cases as they imprinted their logos here as well. I am not one for companies branding their products but Coolmax does it in a classy way. And to protect your new enclosure Coolmax includes some matching carrying cases as well.

If leather isn’t for you then there are the 250T and 250C metal units that I really like.  The metal gives the enclosure a real sleek and dynamic look. And I believe for the simple fact these are not wrapped in the leather like the other models the very little heat made by the drive would dissipate a little better. And just like the others the Coolmax logo is stamped on the front of the enclosure for the world to see. Each model has a brushed aluminum surface that I prefer to anything just flat out shiny as scratches are easier to hide as well as finger prints.

Each unit shares the same connections which are USB and eSATA. Because these enclosures are based around a laptop hard drive there isn’t any need for an external power supply. And to give the user any indication the enclsoure is working properly a LED shines.

Assembling

Installing the drive into the enclosure is about as basic as it gets. The whole process should take no longer than five minutes tops.  Coolmax packaged the enclosures without the end being screwed in. This cuts down on assembly time a little. Simply separate the connector end from the rest of the case and you have access to the inside connectors. Simply attached the hard drive to the PCB and gently slide the drive with the PCB attached back into the main housing. How simply is that?

Testing

We used a Fujitsu drive model number MHW2080BH as the lucky guinea pig. Alone with HD Tach we measured the performance levels of the enclosures.

Test Hardware:
Gigabyte EX38-DS4
Intel Core2Duo E8400
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme
4GB OCZ PC6400 Reaper X
160GB Seagate 7200.10
Sapphire HD4870 GPU
Zalman GS1000 Case
Coolmax 1350B Power Supply

Results

HD Tach
HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.

Conclusion

Like always I will start our conclusion off with this simple statement. These are some classy looking enclosures. Coolmax took a simple concept that many people have come accustom to seeing and made it look better. For some of us, we look for style and things that stand out from the norm. And the 250 series does just that. These enclosures come in many colors as well as many different carrying case types and styles.

For the price you really can’t complaint as they don’t cost anymore than other decent enclosures on the market. We searched the web and found the 250 for as low as $23. One can’t forget this unit is USB and eSATA so we can’t compare this one with enclosures with just an USB port that you can get for about $15.

Usually I can find at least one thing to say negative about a product. But this time I can’t so we will end the review here.
