Introduction to the Filemate Hard Drive Enclosure 3.5"

We have seen many hard drive enclosures come and go through our lab here at Pro-Clockers. Honestly, they all serve the same purpose and do the same exact thing. What more can it be to build an enclosure that is capable of supporting either a 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive. Chances are the enclosure you pick would connect to the PC via an USB port, firewire or eSATA. Chances are you will have to remove a few screws to install the hard drive. These are just two of the common factors we see with all hard drive external cases. So, what is there to make you decide on one casing over another? Company name, price or simply word of mouth.

Being in this business and having the pleasure of dealing with many enclosures, I would base my purchase on quality of the product. You may ask, "How can you get any idea of the quality of a product, if I have not had it in my hot little mitts?" Many stores will allow you to open a product or would even have a demo or sample of the product available. Take the time to look at it. If you are ever in the mood to purchase a hard drive enclosure and you see the Filemate name on a box, I would suggest taking a closer look.

Closer look at the Filemate Enclosure

For those that are color matching fiends, you will be happy to hear that the Filemate enclosure comes in two color variations: black and white. As we stated in the earlier in this article, the enclosure is made of mostly aluminum. Which is how the unit gets its sturdiness. We love the way Wintec gave it a classy but simple style. The front of the unit only consists of a elongated activity light and company name. No more no less. The sides are composed of one piece which makes for a simpler opening when it is time to install your drive.

The rear of this unit has two means in which to connect to your PC. The first is our typical USB port that supports transfer speeds up to 480Mbps and eSATA which has a serious speed advantage at 3.0 Gbps. The enclosure is not considered a NAS unit so no ethernet port is present. Even though we would like to see Filemate develop one. A simple power button also resides on the rear of the unit. Last, at the bottom of the rear is the AC power connector.

Getting inside the enclosure is very simple as we only need to remove two screws. Once removed, the front and hard drive carriage slide apart from the one piece side portion, leaving just the front panel and drive holder. The hard drive is secured to the unit using just four screws. Below we have a shot of the PCB that makes up the Filemate.

Testing and results

Testing Hardware: ASUS W2Jb

Testing Software: HD Tune Pro 3.50

HD Tune Pro 3.50

HD Tune is a Hard Disk utility which has the following functions:

  • Benchmark: measures the performance
  • Info: shows detailed information
  • Health: checks the health status by using SMART
  • Error Scan: scans the surface for errors
  • Temperature display

HD Tune may also work with other storage devices such as memory cards, USB sticks, iPods, etc.

Conclusion

If you want to know how well the Filemate enlcosure did, I would like to say it did pretty darn well. The above 30Mbps is right there in line with all the other enclosures we have ever tested here. The unit is good looking and made well. We feel this enclosure is one of the best looking units on the market. The quality is proof that Wintec wants to give the consumer a well-built component as well as something that is just meant to do the job.

If you looked at the photos of the review, you will see there is no active cooling present in this small box. That is because the outer shell being made of aluminum transfers all the heat produced by the hard drive and transfers it out into the open air.

One thing we would have like to see added to the unit is a quicker way to install the drive like say a lever that opens the front and allows the user to just slide the drive inside. Granted this is not a much needed feature but a good one to have. But Wintec did only use two screws to secure the two pieces together rather than four like most enclosures. Cutting some assembly time.
