MukiiMUKii was generous enough to send over one of their latest models for us to take a look at. This particular adapter is USB 3.0, meaning that getting data to and from the device is much quicker. The real beauty about this item with it's USB3 support is that you get all the performance as you do with the external enclosure model, without the need to disassemble everything if you want or need to swap drives.

Introduction to the MUKii TransImp SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 Adapter

If you are an IT tech, or even the neighborhood PC repairman, a SATA/IDE to USB adapter is a must have component to be in your PC tool kit. As for what that is, it's because the hard drive is one of the quickest components to go bad in a PC. However, the good thing is there are usually tell tale signs when one is on it's way out, with clicking noise and random lock ups being two of the common ones. When these signs are about you may have a fair chance to retrieve the data off before it completely decides to bite the dust, which MUKii even bundles software to help with that task.

MUKii was generous enough to send over one of their latest models for us to take a look at. This particular adapter is USB 3.0, meaning that getting data to and from the device is much quicker. The real beauty about this item with it's USB3 support is that you get all the performance as you do with the external enclosure model, without the need to disassemble everything if you want or need to swap drives.

Closer look

The TransImp adapter is not a very big piece of equipment at all. While it may look as though it is bigger than most of the other USB adapters, in actuality it isn't, measuring in a mere 75 x 49 x 13 mm.

On one long side of the adapter is your typical SATA+power connector with support for any SATA I/II in 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive sizes. Next, we have the IDE connections in both laptop 2.5" and standard 3.5". Turning the adapter another 90 degrees and we have the connections for the USB and A/C power cables. Finally on the top there is a single power LED as with the MUKii logos.

Along with the TransImp comes its own power and USB 3.0 cables. None of the cables are permanent attachments like the Scythe model we reviewed some time ago. The power cable has a manual off/on switch to easily control power to the drive.

Software

As we mentioned on the opening page, the advantage with the MUKii offerings are the software bundled with the enclosures, an option that many other manufacturers do not included. This simple little bonus makes things easier for the consumer, adding to the list of what make this a quality product. The M One application, as it is called, is essentially a front end to smaller apps. This gives you access to: auto formatting, energy saving stages, performance increasing, auto back up and drive status/health feedback (translating S.M.A.R.T. into easy to understand info). The applications are very straightforward and simple to use. (Note: Same verbiage as our MUKii TransImp SuperSpeed Enclosure review, as the software and its operation are the same)

Testing and results

We tested the adapter using some of today's most popular and easy to find benchmark applications. Testing was done using both USB 2.0 and SuperSpeed protocols, to give you a fair idea or how they compare. At this time only SATA was tested, but we may have a followup in the near future with a 3.5" IDE (and possibly 2.5") test when the drives become available.

CrystalDiskMark 2.7.4
CrystalDiskMark is designed to quickly test the performance of your hard drives. Currently, the program allows to measure sequential and random read/write speeds.

HD Tune Pro 3.50
HD Tune Pro is an extended version of HD Tune which includes many new features such as: write benchmark, secure erasing, AAM setting, folder usage view, disk monitor, command line parameters and file benchmark.

Conclusion

When it comes to adapters like the MUKii SATA/IDE to USB, they are fairly inexpensive and very simple to use. For any IT personnel, to the neighborhood PC technician, these little adapters are a must have. Honestly I can not think of a reason for one not to have one in your bag if you consider yourself a tech. The MUKii offering does have one advantage (for now) to many on the shelves at your local electronics store and that is the support for SuperSpeed. With the upgraded performance of USB 3.0 the time to transfer data from one drive to the system is cut well in half.

It is currently unavailable in most parts, but we suspect this hot little item to be available in many places soon.
