A Closer Look
The minute the keyboard was out of the box, the standout feature was the brushed black aluminum top. It’s all so common to see generic black plastic covers on entry level mechanical keyboards so it’s nice to see Cooler Master adding a premium feature like this to the CK line of keyboards.
The brushed aluminum top also extends down both sides of the keyboard, giving it a nice sleek look.
Flipping the keyboard over, we see 2 rubberized cushions on the front, 2 feet at the back and the Cooler Master logo in the center.
Taking a closer look at the feet, they seem very well constructed and sturdy. I have broken a lot of feet on keyboards, but this doesn’t look like it will be a problem with the CK522.
Looking at the side of the keyboard, you can see that the keys are visible, giving them a floating look. We prefer them this way on our RGB keyboards as it adds a nice effect when the keys are illuminated. Due to the open nature of the keys it may require a little more cleaning than the closed design, especially if you have pets.
When you do want to clean your keyboard, the key caps are easily removed with the provided tool.
Taking a closer look at the switches, you will see it has a clear body with a red stem and the RGB LED is located at the top of the key.
The first time you plug in the keyboard, it is illuminated with the same purple that was accented on the box. We used the CK552 for the last few days as our daily driver and we’re really impressed with how it performed. The keys were not super clicky, but still had a nice tactile feel and we had no issues getting used to typing on it due to the standard layout. The RGB LED’s are quite bright and they are configurable via the downloadable software or on-the-fly controls.
To use the pre-configured on-the-fly controls, the CK522 includes a key with the outline of the Cooler Master logo which is used in combination with other keys. These key combinations can be found in the manual provided.
By pressing the Cooler Master key with F5, we changed the LED’s to our favorite mode “Rainbow Wave”. Not only can you switch between the preconfigured patterns with the on-the-fly controls you can also configure the LED color of each key, change keyboard profiles and even record/delete macro’s.
Removing the key caps when the keyboard was illuminated, enables you to see the vivid brightness of the RGB LED’s.
