Introduction to the OCZ Platinum DDR3 PC15000

Closer look

OCZ uses their signature XTC cooling heat spreaders on this series of memory. These are the simplest form of heat spreaders from OCZ, when you consider the likes of the Reapers, Blades and FLX XLC line up. All are taller and heavier than the XTC spreaders. Behind the XTC spreaders are chips capable of 8-8-8-24 timings at an incredible 1.65 volts.

We won't go into great detail as we have covered the XTC lineup many times here on Pro-Clockers, but you can not have XTC without the big Z in the middle of the heat spreader. In August 1995, the calculation of pi up to 4,294,960,000 decimal digits was succeeded by using a supercomputer at the University of Tokyo. The program was written by D.Takahashi and he collaborated with Dr. Y.Kanada at the computer center, the University of Tokyo. This record should be the current world record. (Details are shown in the windows help.) This record-breaking program was ported to personal computer environment such as Windows NT and Windows 95. In order to calculate 33.55 million digits, it takes within 3 days with Pentium 90MHz, 40MB main memory and 340MB available storage.

Overclocking

I spent a great deal of time with these modules and I conclude their overclocking ability is decent. I was able to hit the magically 2000MHz, but it was done by loosening the timings to 9-9-9-25. Actually, I was able to hit 2030MHz with these timings. With the default timings of 8-8-8-28, I did manage 1980MHz which is still very respectable from a $120 kit of memory. (Editor's Note. $120 for 6 gigs of memory is a great deal.)

Conclusion

If you are looking to jump on the Core i7 upgrade path, the Platinum series triple channel 1866 is a good route to take. The very decent timings of 8-8-8-28 are good for allowing the i7 processor maintain the performance numbers we all expect. If you are looking for a kit that will run tighter timings, then look on farther than this Platinum series as we were able to run 7-7-7-24 at the voltage limits of 1.64. Most kits running these tighter timings can easily double the money that these cost.

Overclocking the Platinum series was a little time-consuming, but worth the time and effort. Without taking the voltage above 1.64 volts at 8-8-8 we were able to establish a stable 1980MHz. But at 9-9-9, we got to the 2000MHz that everyone wants to achieve when purchasing an inexpensive kit of memory.

I would definitely recommend this kit to anyone looking to upgrade to the Intel i7 and looking to do mild overclocking. The person looking to do some extreme overclocking may want to look to one of OCZ's other great kits like the Blades.
