Intel’s Core i9-9900K can boost a single core to 5.0 GHz. Let’s see if we can get a little more.

We like to try out any automatic overclocking utilities first, but the Phantom Gaming Tuning utility informs us it only works on unlocked X and K SKU CPU’s and EZ OC is not supported on our i9-9900k. We’re not sure if this is a bug in this version of the software, or perhaps the 1.60 BIOS version, but it will probably get fixed.

We’ll start out by jumping straight to 5.0 GHz on all cores. The Phantom Gaming 9 doesn’t even bat an eye.

We left all BIOS settings in auto besides setting the multiplier at 50, and we get around 1.35V which gives us fairly decent temperatures.

We went ahead and moved up to 5.1 GHz and again the PG9 didn’t even have to try. We tried for 5.2GHz but couldn’t quite get 100% stable, so this is far enough, especially since we are bumping our self-imposed 90C limit.

We pushed the memory up to 3400, and then up to 3600 with no problems, but this particular memory kit didn’t want to go any further. In the end, we get a Cinebench score of 2120, about a 3% increase with almost zero effort.
