Packaging and Unboxing

The Asus ROG Strix X99 Gaming box has an image of the motherboard is featured on the front with rainbow colored graphics, hinting at the Aura Sync lighting feature.

The rear of the box features detailed pictures and showcases many of the more predominate features. Basic motherboard basic specifications are included as well. It is quite detailed and easy to read.

The motherboard is located in a cardboard tray in the top of the box.

All the accessories are located in the bottom of the box under the motherboard. There are quite a few accessories.

First up we find a User Guide, utility disk, ROG Strix sticker sheet and a ROG case badge.

Next we find a RGB extension cable and ROG cable labels.

There are also some cable ties, Asus Q-Connector, and a ROG SLI Bridge.

Also included in an I/O shield and four SATA cables.

A motherboard accent kit allows multiple lighting options.

Lastly, there is a CPU installation tool and a Wi-Fi antenna.

A Closer Look

The ROG Strix X99 Gaming is part of Asus’s Republic of Gamers line of motherboards, which is broken down into the Formula series and the Strix series. The Strix is the more affordable of the two series.

Black with orange signifies the ROG Strix X99 Gamin, along with its sharp lines, gives it an aggressive look.

There are four USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type-A port, and one USB 3.1 Type-C port. The RJ-45 port is driven the I218-V Intel chipset. Four audio out jacks, with a microphone in jack and optical port provide audio connections. The two antenna jacks prove connection for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and includes Bluetooth v4.1.

The lower rear edge of the motherboard includes and COM header.  The front panel audio header, COM header, and RGB header reside towards the rear of the motherboard. Towards the center are and power and reset buttons. I diagnostic LED readout is on the right.  The M.2 socket supports only PCI-E 3.0 x4 M-key 2242/2260/2280/22110 drives.

The lower front section edge of the motherboard also contains a TPM header, front panel USB 3.0 header, ROG extension headers, USB 2.0 header, and the front panel header. Above those are the thermal sensor header, external fan header, EZ XMP switch, and chassis fan 2 header.

The area around the CPU socket feels quite roomy. The eight memory slots support DDR4 at speeds up to 3333 MHz. The MemOK button resides just below the screw hole.

Two U.2 connectors allow for external PCI-E storage drives. There are a total of eight (2 not shown) SATA 6.0 connectors, two which can be combines into one SATA Express connector.

The 24-pin ATX power connector resides towards the top. Just below it is chassis fan 1 header, two more SATA connectors, and a second front panel USB 3.1 connector. 

Triple CPU fan headers and a 4-pin and a 8-pin CPU power connector reside on the very top of the motherboard.
