Closer look

The Genius Ring Presenter is a great little device when you want to wow the audience at your next board meeting. It is far from the typical pen-style presenter you will fit at your local electronic store, this one is more unique. We will get into the details of its operation shortly.

First, we begin with the overall physical aspects of the Ring. The Ring is about as small as one of the smaller pieces of Legos my twin daughters have laying around over all the place. The body is made of plastic while the ring holder is made of rubber. The Ring comes in several different colors to better fit your color matching needs. There is blue, lime green, orange, pink, purple, silver and black.

The first fascia of the Ring consists of a four directional pad which are function keys. The center black piece inside the silver circle is how you direct the cursor or pressing it acts as the left mouse button. Also pressing it for about three seconds allows you to drag and release objects. There is a power LED and the Genius that finishes off the face of the Ring.

Looking at the left side of the Ring is a simple slide switch that will allow you to switch between mouse and presenter modes as well as turn the unit off.

The top of the Ring there is the micro-USB charging port. The unit does charge directly from the PC. It can be charged via AC if you have the proper adapter to do so. And a small sensor to allow the Ring to send functions to the mini-USB receiver over a 2.4 GHz frequency and works up to 10 meters.

Next, we have the rubber ring that fits around the finger. It may look small but it will open pretty wide to accommodate those with thicker fingers.

Software

The software needed to setup the Ring comes on a mini-CD. We choose to download it directly from Genius due no optical drive in the machine I use. The application only has one real function and that is to select the DPI setting. The rest of the app just tells you the function of each button.

Testing

Using the Ring Presenter in either environment is pretty simple and straightforward. The only aspect of the Ring we felt took any getting use to were functions as a mouse. Simple because on a traditional mouse you have several buttons to do what is needed here you have a D-pad and a center button to accomplish all the function of a regular mouse.

The slide switch of the Ring is pretty tiny and only a slight movement is needed to select your function. Those with fat finger tips may have to resort to using your nails if you have any. And if that is not the case have fun. I outfitted three different people with the Ring and two of the three placed the Ring just after the first joint pass the fingertip while the other slide it all the way down the entire finger next to the last joint where the finger meets the hands. I was one of the two. This was more comfortable for me as it felt like I was aiming a gun.

The speed of the mouse can be adjusted from Auto, 250 to 1250 DPI. This doesn’t seem fast but for a device like this I believe it is plenty. While working within a document I choose the slower setting and when using the entire screen Auto and the faster settings were great. I even connected to my HTPC to navigate through music and movie titles using the Auto setting.

Conclusion

The Genius Ring Presenter is a neat little device that will allow you several freedoms. No longer will you need both a presenter and a mouse to breeze through your PowerPoint presentations or to do basic PC computing. You have it all in one tiny device.

Genius allows the consumer to pick just what color of the Ring they want. There are a total of seven colors. You don’t get that with any other devices of this nature. And another wonderful thing about the Ring is that it is easy to transport even with the tiny USB adapter.

According to Google shopping we saw the price of the Ring ranging from $45 to $65.
