One of the features that made the Silent Pro line a great seller in stores was it met the 80PLUS Gold standards. Call you say 90% efficiency rating? It’s all about going green and conserving energy these days. Added insurance is offered in the form of over and under protection which is a must have when looking for a quality and stable power supply.

Introduction to the Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800 Watt Power Supply

We reviewed the Cooler Master Silent Pro 1200 watt power supply some time ago which turned out to be one heck of a power supply. But honestly, how many of us need this much power? Answer? A few of us with multi-GPU rigs or very large file server and we are not talking just four or five drives. And for those that do not need this much power we have the smaller less powerful version of the Silent Pro 1200.

The Silent Pro 800 offers all the features and protection found in the big brother, just less wattage.

Cooler Master’s take on the Silent Pro

Ranging from the ever-efficient 600W all the way up to the 1200W power supply, the Silent Pro Gold will satisfy the energy cravings of any system. With a power efficiency rating of 90%, the Silent Pro Gold line meets the 80Plus Gold Standard. To achieve this goal, Cooler Master incorporates three visionary patents into this innovative design. The Hybrid Transformer™ incorporates the transformer with the heat sink, not only reducing the size by 25% over traditional transformers, but by keenly conducting heat, superiorly increasing efficiency. The Heat Transfer Technology™ crafted especially for powerful, demanding power units utilizes and L-shaped design to ingeniously route air flow by the heat sink, resulting in greater heat dissipation and therefore providing an optimal performance. The Hyper Path™ adeptly places the integrated circuits tightly to the transformers, shortening the path and creating a more direct energy channel, reducing the energy loss to nearly nothing. Combining these elements with the integrated active PFC with PWN controller, an intelligent 120/135 mm speed-adjustable fan, a powerful single rail engaging the most energy-greedy peripherals with ease, and countless other features, the Silent Pro Gold Series will handle all your computer power needs.

Closer look

We will not go into extreme detail like we normally do for each of the products that we review. The reason for this is because we did take a look at the Silent Pro 1200W when it was released and the cosmetics of each are identical in appearance.

We will state a few facts about the unit. The biggest feature of the unit that is does past the 80PLUS rating for a Gold efficient power supply. Meaning the unit is at least an efficiency rating of 87% at 20% and 100% loads and 90% at 50% load. There have been many reviews on the 1200W ability to do this with ease so we don’t think the 800W model will be any different.

With the about of individuals building higher end gaming machines, Cooler Master made sure the unit was certified for Crossfire and SLI. And in order to provide adequate power and stability to such a machine Cooler Master address the rail with the enough amps and watts to do the gamer great justice. The single +12 volt rail has a total of 65A and 780W.

Visibly, Cooler Master did it with class and style. A matte black with ascents of white and gold is all that grace the surface of the PSU. The unit has the specification stick on the top of the unit and not the side making for a cleaner look.

The sides of the unit just display the wattage and series name.

To cool the unit a 120mm is implemented. The specs on the unit are a mystery when looking at Cooler Master’s site except for the fact that it is quiet. The unit is PWM controlled and relies on heat and load to determine how fast the fan will spin.

The only portion of the cabling system that is permanent is the main ATX, dual PCIe and AUX power connectors.

Results

We know that testing a power supply on a loaded system is not the very best way to do so, but you can not overlook real world testing. Other sites have methods that use thousands of dollars in equipment to provide them greater detail. We have a trusty digital multi-meter. Those sites and the methods they use should be the true means of determining how good a power supply really is; however, we feel that showing you how it performs under real world conditions is also a valid measure of its performance.

Conclusion

Cooler Master has once again shown they are looking out for the gamer, profession and enthusiast when it comes to power supplies. The Silent Pro Gold series is designed for those looking for efficiency, high power output and subtle good looks. This time around we turned the 800W model and found that it was just a capable at supporting our test bench as the 1000W model we fell in love with. We have placed the Silent Pro Gold in several cases over the past couple of months and found that it was right at home in each scenario.

The end user depending on the individual will like several other things about the Silent Pro Gold. First, would be the modular cables which in this case are flat and very easy to work with if you are a stickler when it comes to cable management. The next feature is definitely a love it or hate it option and that is the unit has a single 12v rail. I personally can go either way just as long as the unit is built well and stable.

For under $140, the Silent Pro Gold 800 is a solid buy. Not the cheapest 800W models on the market but you have to pay for quality and that is just what you are getting with this new power supply from Cooler Master.
