coolermaster usna95These are just two reasons that I wish power adapters would just disappear altogether, but the chances of that happening are slim. In the meantime we do have the USNA95 from Cooler Master. This little slim AC adapter has plenty of juice to power your mid-sized laptop, or even your cell if you need it. The real kicker is the fact the USNA95 is about the size of a deck of playing cards, and best of all it weighs about the same as one too.

Introduction to the Cooler Master USNA95 Ultra Slim Power Adapter

I have seen many of power adapters in my time, and chances are you have as well. Everything from cell phones to laptops needs them. The unfortunate thing is they all eventually go bad, and when they do contacting the manufacturer of the device may cost you a pretty penny. Getting a hold of an OEM replacement power adapter has proven to be expensive, so this would leave many of us looking at third party power units.

Another not too pleasant thing about power adapter is having to lug these things around all the time. They are so often big, bulky and heavy. The added weight on your shoulders can be unbearable at times.

These are just two reasons that I wish power adapters would just disappear altogether, but the chances of that happening are slim.

Closer look

The USNA95 is a slim-line adapter, measuring a mere 4 inches long, making it easier to transport along with your laptop. Don't let the small size fool you though, with it comes a ton of power production. For larger devices like a laptop, the USNA95 can provide up to 95 watts under normal conditions, with a peak of 150W.

One feature that makes the USNA95 unique is that it can provides voltages as low as 4.75 to charge and power small devices like PDAs or digital cameras. And if your device does not have an A/C jack then you will be happy to know that the USNA95 has a USB port to accommodate their charging needs as well.

The USNA95 comes with nine tips to cover a large range of laptops, and with each tip comes it's own color, which in turn links to a particular set of laptops it will work with. This takes out the guess work and allows you to pick the right one for you with ease. The tips are held in order on this plastic base to keep them organized and together. Granted the list below may list your laptop brand, but check the link to see if your specific model is supported.

Tip Color Application Tip Color Application
Orange ACER, ASUS, HP, COMPAQ, BENQ           Gray ACER, ASUS, COMPAQ
Red ACER White SONY
Blue ACER, HP, COMPAQ, IBM, LENOVO Black DELL, HP, COMPAQ
Yellow IBM, LENOVO Purple SAMSUNG
Green ACER, ASUS, HP, COMPAQ, TOSHIBA, FUJITSU, GATEWAY, NEC
Certain laptops that have unique ID design (i.e. some models of Dell) for their own adapters, this product can still provide operation for the laptop, but may not charge the laptop battery. For detailed compatible laptop models, please visit our global website: www.coolermaster.com

Testing

For the testing procedure we made it simple and painless. We simply plugged the USNA95 several devices we had laying around the lab. A variety of these were a couple cell phones including my HTC HD2 and my wife’s aged RAZR, and each charged without a problem. Even my wife’s 2nd generation Ipod Touch charged easily. After these we moved on to large devices, the first was my wife’s Lenovo S10 Netbook using the blue tip, again no problem. Last was my own Sony VPCF111FX. This laptop is not listed on CM’s site as being compatible but I thought I would give it a shot anyways. Specifications for this model are 19.5v at 6.2A which equals 120 watts surpassing CM’s regular usage specification. I used the laptop for about an hour on the adapter without issues. Before actually using this adapter for any model not listed on the site, please check first with Cooler Master (Editor's Note: Even then we recommend only doing so if you are 100% confident. No point in risking frying something, or worse overheating the power brick and potentially causing a fire!)

Conclusion

I have come across many people in my daily travels that have either lost, damaged or left their laptop adapter at home. The Cooler Master USNA95 is a nice replacement if you fall under any one of these. It is powerful and compatible with a lot of laptops, as well as other devices. At 95 watts the USNA95 is good enough to provide power to most laptops up to 17” in size. My power hungry Sony laptop draws just over 120 watts and the USNA95 operated it just fine.

The USNA95 is also able to charge smaller devices through it's USB port, like cell phones and MP3 players. At 1A chances are the charge time will be faster this route than going through the computer’s USB port. This makes the USNA95 a "Jack of all trades" when it comes to power adapters, eliminating the need to carry a separate one for each of your electronics.

One of the best features of the Cooler Master USNA95 is it'ss physical size. The USNA95 is about four inches long, making it half the size and weight of most OEM laptop adapters, and that means it is easier to transport around. I like the idea of having a USNA95 as a spare adapter kept in my travel bag for business and vacation trips.
