Introduction

Your computers power supply is the heart of your system and should be given as much thought as any other component in your build. Overclocking with a substandard power supply can be frustrating and systems can even be damaged by overtaxing low quality power supplies. When choosing power supplies we always look for at least a 25% excess capacity and with the new mega core CPU's and overclocking reaching 5GHz on a routine basis nows the time to think about your PSU choices. We like watt monster power supplies in the 1000W or higher range and planning for the future so we tend to go high on wattage. SilverStone was kind enough to send us one of their 1500W monster power supplies to look at and we have the SilverStone Silver Strider ST-1500GS 80+ Gold power supply on the bench today.

The SilverStone ST1500-GS is a fully modular power supply and is, in fact, the smallest 1500W PSU built with a footprint of 150 mm (W) × 86 mm (H) × 180 mm (D). The 180mm deep footprint means that it will fit in most mid-tower chassis allowing you to pack a ton of power into a small space without sacrificing quality or capability. With this beauty, you will never have to worry about having enough power to run multiple graphics cards. Graphics wise the Silver Strider 1500W 80+ Gold comes with 4 PCIe connectors and has two 6+2 PCIe on each cable for a total of 8 graphics cards connectors and with efficiency running between 87 - 90% suitable for crypto-mining or just powering that dream array of graphics cards in SLI or X-Fire.

Some time back computer enthusiasts came up with the idea of Power Density, simply put Power Density is the amount of power delivered per liter of volume in PSU. You calculate the liters of space the PSU occupies then divide the rated power by that calculator liter volume. Here's what the math looks like for the SilverStone Silver Strider ST1500-GS.

ST1500-GS wattage = 1500 Watt

ST1500-GS size = 150mm (W) x 86mm (H) x 180mm (D) = 2.32 liters

1500 Watt ÷ 2.32 liters = 646.55 Watt/liters

Here's how a liter is defined:

A liter is defined as a special name for a cubic decimeter, or 10 centimeters × 10 centimeters × 10 centimeters.  (1 L ≡ 1 dm3 ≡ 1000 cm3)

So the SilverStone Silver Strider ST1500-GS packs a whopping 646.55 Watt/Liter ratio which makes it the smallest most powerful (for the size) PSU in the world. We like the direction SilverStone went packing all that power into that small a footprint. Watt Monster wattage, small size, 135mm whisper quiet fan, SilverStone reliability and quality there's just not much more you can ask from a PSU. SilverStone even exceeds the industry standard of 5% variance on any power supply line and decreases their tolerance to 3% + or - on any rail. Now think about it, all that power, 1500W, in the smallest footprint PSU of that size in the world, highest power density, 3% variance on any rail, and no more the 50-120mV ripple on any line. That kind of engineering and execution of manufacturing makes SilverStone one of the industries leading PSU manufacturers!
