Introduction

Crucial BX100 1TB SSD

Crucial is a global brand of Micron Technology, Inc., one of the largest memory and flash storage manufacturers in the world. They make computer memory upgrades (DRAM) and solid state drives (SSDs), and offer more than 250,000 upgrades for over 50,000 systems. They have a reputation for quality and their SSD’s are well regarded.

Crucial’s BX100 1TB SATA SSD is one of the newer entries in the crowded solid state drive market. Unlike Crucial’s also recently released MX200, the BX100 is designed to be a value oriented drive. The BX100 uses a Silicon Motion SM2246EN controller, combines with the same Micron 16nm (MLC) Flash used in the MX100 and MX200 drives. As a result, Crucial has rated the BX100 for speeds of up to 535 MB/s read and 450 MB/s.

Crucial's take on the BX100 1TB SATA SSD

Outlast and outperform your hard drive.

Boot up almost instantly. Load programs in seconds. And accelerate demanding applications with ease. It all starts with ditching your hard drive. Engineered to outlast and outperform your hard drive, the Crucial® BX100 SSD makes nearly everything on your computer faster and more efficient.

Over 15x faster than a typical hard drive

Get more done in less time — or just have more fun. The Crucial BX100 SSD is over 15 times faster than today’s best-selling internal hard drive, and delivers true 535 MB/s sequential reads on both compressible and incompressible data. By treating all data the same, the Crucial BX100 allows you to do everything quickly, whether you’re saving an image, accessing a ZIP file, or loading a video.

Over 2x more reliable than a typical hard drive

Protect your data by storing it on the Crucial BX100, which is significantly more reliable than a typical hard drive. In the computer industry, storage drive reliability is measured in mean times between failures (MTBF). Most hard drives have MTBF ratings of 0.6 million hours, whereas the Crucial BX100 has a reliability rating of 1.5 million hours. In practical terms, the more reliable your drive is, the less likely it is to crash.

Over 2x more energy efficient than a typical hard drive

Run your system longer and harder — using less power. With Extreme Energy Efficiency technology, the Crucial BX100 is over 2x more energy efficient than a typical hard drive. Since SSDs access data digitally rather than seeking it out on a spinning platter, they consume significantly less power.

Better value than a typical SSD

Get more out of your system — without compromising quality. At write speeds up to 535 MB/s, the Crucial BX100 SSD isn’t the fastest drive on the market, but that’s squarely our intent. We painstakingly engineered the Crucial BX100 to provide a massive performance boost, while also delivering an unrivaled value among SSDs. Make the switch to the Crucial BX100 and get everything you expect from a Crucial SSD at an unexpected value.

Time for a closer look.

Let's move on to testing in the next page.

System Configuration and Performance Testing

Testing Hardware:

  • Gigabyte GA-X99-UD5 WiFi Motherboard
  • Intel Core i7 5820K Processor
  • Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB 2666MHz Memory
  • Kingston HyperX 3K 480GB Solid State Drive
  • Custom Water Cooling
  • Spotswood Small Tech Bench
  • XFX PRO850W XXX Edition 850w Silver Power Supply
  • PowerColor Radeon R9 285 TurboDuo Graphics Card

Testing Software:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
  • ATTO Disk Benchmark
  • CrystalDiskMark 3.0
  • AS SSD
  • Anvil's Storage Utilities
  • Ashampoo HDD Control 3
  • PCMark 8 Pro

Performance Testing

ATTO Disk Benchmark

“As the industry's leading provider of high-performance storage & network connectivity products, ATTO has created a widely-accepted Disk Benchmark freeware utility to help measure storage system performance. As one of the top tools utilized in the industry, Disk Benchmark identifies performance in hard drives, solid state drives, RAID arrays as well as connections to storage. Top drive manufacturers, like Hitachi, build and test every drive using the ATTO Disk Benchmark"

Crucial BX100 1TB SSD

With ATTO we get a rough baseline of the drive's expected performance. I recorded a sequential read performance of 559 MB/s and a sequential write performance 448 MB/s in ATTO. Read and write performance are very close to the specifications provided by Crucial, though write speed fell just below it.

CrystalDiskMark 3.0

“CrystalDiskMark is designed to quickly test the performance of your hard drives. Currently, the program allows to measure sequential and random read/write speeds."

Crucial BX100 1TB SSD

CrystalDiskMark gives us a good view of single threaded sequential read performance.

AS SSD

"Test the sequential or random read/write performance without using the cache. AS SSD Benchmark reads/writes a 1 GB file as well as randomly chosen 4K blocks. Additionally, it performs the tests using 1 or 64 threads and it determines the SSD's access time.

Two extra benchmark tests examine the drive's behavior when (1) copying a few big files, a lot of small files and a mixture of file sizes by using cached copy functions of your OS as well as (2) reading/writing data depending on the data's compressibility."

The results from AS SSD are above average for a current model SSD. In the last set we see the drive's ability to write three different file types, all of which are 1 GB in size. Not only do the results show the drive's speed in MB/s, it also shows the time required. The drive is still able to write 1 GB in under 8 seconds in all 3 of the latter tests.

Anvil's Storage Utilities

"Anvil's Storage Utilities is a powerful tool that was designed in order to provide you with a simple means of assessing the read and writer performance of your Solid State Drive or Hard Disk Drive. The benchmark tool helps you monitor and check the response time of your unit as well as view the system information collected using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)."

The ADATA BX100 performs consistently with most common file types. This should result in a high level of customer satisfaction, no matter what the task.

Ashampoo HDD Control 3

"The hard drive is one of the most important components of your computer. Even if a hard drive works flawlessly, it should still be regularly checked and maintained. This way an imminent hard drive failure can be detected early and might be prevented. If suddenly major problems occur or if your hard drive even completely fails, data loss might be the result

The test results from Ashampoo were exactly what were expected. Drive speed is relatively consistent across the entire storage media.

PCMark 8

"Use the PCMark 8 Storage benchmark to test the performance of SSDs, HDDs and hybrid drives with traces recorded from Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and a selection of popular games. You can test the system drive or any other recognized storage device, including local external drives. Unlike synthetic storage tests, the PCMark 8 Storage benchmark highlights real-world performance differences between storage devices."

The PCMark 8 Storage bandwidth score of 246.12 MB/s is good score for a drive that is marketed as budget friendly.

Let's wrap up the review in the last page.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Crucial BX100 1TB SSD

The Crucial BX100 feels very much like the MX200 we tested a short time ago. The BX100 shares the same excellent finish and solid construction of the MX200, something we have come to expect from Crucial.

ATTO recorded as read speed of 559 MB/s, about 4% above the specification provided by Crucial. ATTO did record a write speed of 448 MB/s, just below the Crucial supplied 450 MB/s specification, certainly not enough to be concerned with. Performance was extremely constant, dealing with both compressed and uncompressed data with ease.

The BX100 is also available in 120GB, 250GB, and 500GB capacities for those on a tighter budget or who just do not need a primary drive of this size. The Crucial BX100 1TB SATA SSD is available online from Newegg for $399.99. This is about 10-15% less expensive than a typical high performance SSD of this capacity, making the price very competitive.
