It’s no secret that NVidia’s 1000 series, Pascal GPUs has been one of the most exciting launches in recent history. Like many other major GPU launches, availability was scarce and limited to the reference, or “Founders Edition” cards. Well, this is no longer the case. The board partners are finally releasing cards their own versions of the both the GTX 1080 and 1070. Cards with additional 6 and 8 pin power adapters, beefed up power delivery, custom PCBs and custom coolers. One such company is MSI, whose Twin Frozr VI cooler provides some of the best air cooling on the market today. The MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING 8G was one of the first board partner cards to feature a custom PCB, and the difference shows. With its custom PCB sporting a 10-phase power delivery, can this GTX 1070 really trade blows with the likes of the Titan X. Will it be able to inch out the Founders Edition 1070? Join me as I run the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 GAMING 8G through my gauntlet of benchmarks. Let’s see how the MSI GTX 1070 GAMING 8G holds up!

The Pascal Architecture

A die shot of the GP104 GPU

Pascal is designed to offer the highest performance for deep learning and other compute performance. Pascal is Nvidia’s successor to their 28 NM Maxwell Architecture. The Pascal microarchitecture uses the 16 nanometer FinFET manufacturing process from TSMC, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. With 150 billion transistors, Pascal is the world’s largest FinFET Chip ever built. Delivering over 5 Teraflops of double precision performance, Pascal is also the most powerful architecture ever inside of a GPU.
