Introduction

A couple of days ago and a large press conference, AMD announced the line of technologies. It was a much anticipated event and many new and upcoming products were showcased. Much of the community’s focus was on the new Fury line of graphics cards that are forthcoming. Also announced was the line of R7 300 and R9 300 series video cards. Today we will be looking at one of those new cards, the PowerColor PCS+ R9 390.

On paper, the R9 390 looks very much like the R9 290 that came before it. Indeed, it is based on the Hawaii GPU released back in October 2013. AMD has made some important tweaks to the Hawaii silicon that they now call Grenada. AMD has been able to add an additional base clock to increase pixel performance. They also changed the video memory from the previous 4Gb of 1250MHz DDR5 to 8Gb of 1500MHz DDR5, increasing texture performance. This alone should allow for greater performance at 4K resolutions and give the card longer flexibility.

The PowerColor PCS+ R9 390 utilizes 8GB of GDDR5 memory with 2560 stream processors and ships with core clock speed at 1010MHz. The 1500MHz memory is connected via a new high speed 512-bit memory interface. For enhancing power efficiency and preventing losses, Digital PWM solution is provided to work at a higher frequency in order to support fine tuning adjustment and low ripple at an output voltage. Moreover, the total of 8 phase (6+1+1) board design is applied to the models for power efficiency, stability, and delivering ultimate performance at OC mode. Pow|Rstage increases the power up to 3-13%, features up to 1.0 MHz switching frequency, and supports efficient cooling ability.

An anodized back plate is attached to the back of the card to protect the components as well as helping to lower the temperature. The PCS+ triple fan cooler features Mute Fan Technology, which delivers intelligent fan controlling to provide noiseless environment as well as reducing the power consumption when the GPU temperature is lower than 60°C. The cooler is equipped with a pure copper GPU block to absorb heats from GPU, with 3 6mm heat pipes and 1 8mm heat pipe that deliver heat to a nickel plated aluminum fin heat sink.
