When the AMD Radeon R9 290X was released on October 24, 2013 the anticipation meeting up to the release was quickly replace with a bit of disappointment. AMD’s new card was definitely a performer, but it required quite a bit of power to run it. If that wasn’t enough, the card also ran extremely hot. Within a few months, manufacturers started releasing versions with their own color designs. This quickly elevated any concerns that purchasers had about the high temperatures.
PowerColor has released two versions of the now popular Radeon R9 290X with a beefier cooler. One is the PCS+ Radeon R9 290X with a triple fan cooler that we reviewed back in January 2015. The other is the TurboDuo Radeon R9 290X. The TurboDuo R9 290X leaves the clocks at the stock 1000MHz on the core and 1250MHz on the memory. The TurboDuo features a twin fan design that should offer cooling that is substantially better than the AMD reference cooler design.
