Introduction

A couple of months ago and a large press conference, AMD announced the line of technologies. It was a much anticipated event and many new and upcoming products were showcased. Much of the community’s focus was on the new Fury line of graphics cards that are forthcoming. Also announced was the line of R7 300 and R9 300 series video cards. Today we will be looking at one of those new cards, the Sapphire Nitro R7 370.

One paper, the R7 370 looks very much like the R7 265 and the HD 7850 that came before it, the latter of which was released back in March 2012. AMD has made some tweaks to the Pitcairn silicon that they now call Curacao. Still, the R7 370 is based on GCN 1.0 silicon, sop the question is, how does it hold up to the latest from Nvidia.

The Sapphire Nitro R7 370 utilizes 4GB of GDDR5 memory with 1024 stream processors and ships with core clock speed at 1010MHz. The 1500MHz memory is connected via a new high speed 256-bit memory interface. Sapphire has added their Dual-X cooler with Intelligent Fan Control (IFC-II) which turns off the fans for silent operation under light load. There is a new shroud design and diecast heatsink keep the card running cool. The Nirto R7 370 supports the new technologies DirectX 12 and AMD VSR.

Dual BIOS

This product supports both Legacy and UEFI BIOS. By factory default, the card itself is under Legacy mode. By pressing the button with SAPPHIRE logo, UEFI mode will be easily enabled.

Secure boot

Sapphire product with “Dual Firmware Support” function equips the UEFI firmware that is digitally signed and approved by Microsoft for Secure Boot. With Windows8’s secured boot architecture and its establishment of a root of trust, the customer is protected from malicious code executing in the boot path by ensuring that only signed, certified “known good” code and boot loaders can execute before the opening system itself loads. Faster boot and resume times. When compare to the legacy BIOS, system with UEFI has a much faster boot and resume time to the OS.

Frame Rate Target Control

Real time control of maximum rendered frames displayed per second. DFC is aimed at providing smoother gameplay by limiting the maximum displayed frames per second for games whose frame latency vary too much, for example, if a game is keeping frame rate between 50 and 80 FPS, you can set a limit of 45 FPS and enjoy a smoother experience thanks to more stable frame latency. Even if the game is capable to deliver 60 FPS, DFC set to 60 FPS as target can also help by smoothing the frame latency.
