Silverstone Decathlon DA850 850 Watt Power Supply

Today I’m reviewing the Silverstone. I respect Silverstone. Their products are attractive and perform well, but I’m not going to take it easy on the DA850. For this PSU to garner a good review from me, it will have to stay stable while providing power to all my hardware.

Introduction

Enthusiasts love building mammoth PC’s running the meanest, most power-hungry hardware money can buy. As top of the line these days means quad core with dual channel, dual graphics cards, multiple hard drives and killer USB devices. Using an inferior PSU is kind of like running a sports car on a AAA battery.It aint gonna work. To that end, most enthusiasts pursue the white stag of Power supplies, one that has the right blend of power, stability and available connectors.

Here is what silverstone has to say about the decathlon.

“With the knowledge that single +12V rail is the way for next generation power supply, SilverStone Technology continues the expansion of Decathlon series power supplies, offering enthusiasts more flexible and greater output choices to handle their system. The Decathlon DA850 power supply hosts a full array of amenities such as quad PCI-E connectors, 100% modular cable system, bigger and quieter 120mm cooling fan, while still maintaining a typical efficiency of 80% and better. All these combined with powerful 70A single +12V rail output gives DA850 the power superiority in its class.
* The all-around single +12V rail output power with advantage of 100% modular cable system!”

Packaging and contents

The retail box is sturdy with a satin finish and pictures of the contents. It also comes with carrying handle built in to the top. This is a good thing as the DA850 is  a heavy power supply, which in of itself is a plus as lightweight power supplies tend to under-perform.

The DA850 has an awesome spec list. Of particular interest is the 12v rail at 70amps. All but the most power hungry beast should be happy with that and 28 and 30 amps respectively for the 3.3v and 5v rails are more than adequate. The dA850 has over current protection, over power protection, over voltage protection, short circuit protection.

Taking the decathlon out of the box

Opening the retail box, we find the Decathlon wrapped in protective plastic and all the available connectors already in place.By the way, looking down at the cables supplied the DA850 seems ready for the new 8 way pci-e power connectors to so even the newest graphics cards are all compatible and it also has 2 dual 6pin pci-e cables so you can double up on your 8800s if you feel the need too. With 6 sata power connectors and 6 Molex power connectors there should be no shortage of available power for peripherals.

Not sure what to do with all the cables you don’t use? Stow them away in this convenient carrying pouch. This is a very thoughtful add-on and I would love to see other manufacturers follow silverstone’s example.

Here we have the decathlon at full monty with all the cables up in the air. As you can see, the PSU unit itself is a matte black and seems free of defects. The decal provides assurance the easiest to confuse have a chance to install the appropriate cable to the correct outlet. The motherboad connector has a clip to ensure it doesn’t come lose.

And here’s a pic of the Decathlon with the cables unplugged. I have zero complaints here.

Turning it around, we can see the massive fan that will actively cool the Decathlon. With a fan this large, it shouldn’t be a problem. Again, the paint job is top notch and seems free of defect.

This side has specs and test certs.

And this is the grill. We have rocker switch and ac plug. Nice, clean and elegant. I would be surprised to see any logo there but Silverstone.

From top down, the PSU proudly displays it’s heritage.

Here is a pic of the Decathlon with all it’s mighty cables unfurled. It kind of reminds me of a den of writhing rattlesnakes, but with lightning riding it’s veins.

I can honestly say at this point that the Decathlon delivers on appearance and connectivity. Now it’s time to test it’s mettle.

Testing

Our test rig is as such:
AMD 6000 AM2
2 gig of memory
3 sata hard drives
Geforce 8800 gtx
creative x-fi extreme music
3 USB Harddrives,
4 port USB Hub,
and canon multipass printer/scanner/fax.

Results

I took readings at both active and load.
here is what I found:

3.3v

5.0v

12v

Idle

3.308

5.05

12.11

Load

3.304

5.02

12.08

 As you can see, the Decathlon tackled the test machine effortlessly. All readings are well within safe paramaters and stayed that way under load. These are some of the best readings I have seen in a while.

To torture the Decathlon further, it was put in a mission critical render box and left on at load for roughly 3 months. In that 3 months, the machine wasn’t rebooted once and the Decathlon held it’s own, never once faltering. Bravo, Silverstone. Bravo.

Conclusion

However, quality usually has a pricetag and the Decathlon SST-DA850 is no different. Most outlets that carry it price it around 200 USD, making it for people with deep pockets.

So if you’re in the market for a stable, attractive and powerful PSU to put inside your newest graphics monster, number-cruncher and have the money to shell out for it, then look no farther than Silverstone’s Decathlon SST-DA850.

Pros

* Attractive
* more than enough connectors.
* Stable
* Powerful

Cons
* Price

I give it our editors choice award.
