Vantec NST-D400SU3 NexStar SuperSpeed Dual Bay Hard Drive Dock

The first will be the NST-D400SU3 aka NexStar SuperSpeed Dual Bay hard drive dock. After the introduction of enclosure, docks soon followed and in many cases became more useful than an enclosure. There is no assembling and disassembling, just plug and go. The D400SU3 is ideal as it can hold two drives. One added feature to this new model is you can take advantage of both high-speed connections….eSATA and USB 3.0.

Vantec NST-D400SU3 NexStar SuperSpeed Dual Bay Hard Drive Dock Review

Introduction

We have been talking about storage lately only in the form of drives. This is great as the times are pointing towards solid state storage being the future if it isn’t already the present. Even with all of my machines already converted over to a SSD, I still keep a couple of the original mechanical drives around with the data still intact. One reason is because I have this fear of losing the 9k pictures I have of my twin girls.

But we can’t forget about some of the products that allow all the drives to be useable in some situations. I am talking about docks, racks and enclosures. All of these items in some way we all have used and I bet some of these occasions were pretty dire. Today and for the rest of the week, we will be reviewing some of these gadgets from Vantec.

Closer look

The D400SU3 comes in an all-white plastic shell which is great compared to the all-so common black ones we see all the time. The unit isn’t the smallest we have seen before but a lot of it has to do with the unit being able to support dual drives. Still should be small enough to not take up much room on your desk.

The front of the unit displays the Vantec and NexStar logo at the top in each of the corners. In the center is a large power button with a blue LED that surrounds it. and at the bottom we have three lights indicating drives and activity.

In the rear of the dock is a USB 3.0 and eSATA ports with a standard AC/DC plug.

From an above angle we see the dual openings that will support both SATA 2.5” and 3.5” drives. One the drives are inserts and power is given the drives are automatically recognized. And in order to eject the drives, simply press in the buttons to the right of the openings. Each bay supports 3TB drives.

Here we have some drives installed into the unit just to give you some idea of the looks.

Testing performance

Our testing method will simply consist of us testing the transfer speed of our Kingston V+ 200 solid state drives using HDTune.

When it comes to hard drive docks it isn’t like you are out to buy your next PC case for your new build. There just aren’t a lot of features that goes into one of these to make it’s the hardest decision to make. And with that being said we normal go by price and a company that we respect. And when it comes to quality, Vantec is definitely top tier with it comes to devices like this.

The D400SU3 looks great, has a very good solid built to it. This is simple what we have come to expect from Vantec. And using the USB 3.0 and the eSATA as the transfer protocols makes the drive fast and quick. But what really set this model above the rest on the shelves of our favorite electronic store is it supports two drives and not just one.

When we looked up the price of the dock we found it going for $56 from places like Newegg. At first we thought it as too pricey but after further research it was near the built of the price range when compared to many other dual docks. About 90% of the cheaper models we only USB 2.0 and no option for eSATA.
